Chain Mail. Drivetrain Issues! I Need advice?

Whats the deal with 1/8" and 3/16" chains.

I might be after a new chain.  And now I've just found out there 2 sizes.

The one I bought with my BMX has sideways play on the chainwheel so I reckon its a 3/16"

Is OS 1/8" and 3/16" NS or was  3/16" around BITD?

Would running a 3/16" chain on 1/8" chain/freewheel be dangerous?

I want to get all the bits so I can finish my rebuild.

Just bought 2 pairs of MKS Grafight-X from US.  Black 9/16" and White 1/2".  Hopefully they are original and still in good condition.

Might use the White 1/2" which would mean changing my 3pc crank to a 1pc.

Will be using ACS freecoaster on my coaster tuffs II as well.   I presume that is 1/8" as well.

If I change the Crank from 3pc to 1pc.  What exactly would I need apart from the crank.

Could I use the Sealed BB from a 3pc in a 1pc.   And what about the chainwheel?

In my few limited years of BMXing BITD.  I only ever changed one 1 pc crank and that was because the arm was bent.  I didn't replace the BB I just re-used it.

Sorry about all the lame questions, but I have start somewhere.

Thanks

Like it says in the above link, but it boils down to:

Thicker chain:  Can be used with any freewheel and chainring on a BMX (but it might have side to side play on it)

Thinner chain: Will only fit some BMX freewheels and chainrings. (Many will take the thinner chains, usually the quality ones)

This just applies to OS size chainring/freewheel sizes. It gets more tricky when you get down to using a cassette on the back and a small chainring cos not all chains can cope with the small gears

My Quad Freestyler was on EBAY in parts.   I noticed that 1 of the pictures of the F+F had a picture of a complete bike.   I checked his other items and found he had all the bits of the bike up for sale.   I contacted him asking if he would sell the complete bike and how much.  He duly obliged.   Now I probably paid over the odds for the bike, but I'm not too bothered about that.  I wanted it, I couldn't be bothered sourcing all the parts so, it was worth it for the convenience.

The bloke I bought it off is this chap who 1 Fat Pug has been having a good whinge about http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=54941.0

Since then I have bought a load of parts.  This I am not too bothered about because at some I can always use these parts towards a new build.

This all the info I have for the parts from the original ebay listing before I bought the complete bike :-

NEW, 1985 "TIOGA" BMX PRESCISION SEALED BEARING BOTTOM BRACKET CONVERSION KIT  FOR A 3 PIEACE CRANK,PART NUMBER (CK-170 SB).KIT CONSISTS OF 1X CONVERSION AXLE (CV-170H),BOTTOM BRACKRT CUP SET WITH SEALED BEARINGS(BB-170SB),ALL WASHERS AND BOLTS AND A (T 50) WRENCH

1985 "SUGINO" CT 175mm CHROMOLY THREE PIEACE CRANK SET WITH "NOS" BLUE 43 TOOTH "SUGINO" CHAIN WHEEL. IN THERE original BOX. IMACULATE LIKE NEW CONDITION.SUPERB QUALITY AND INDESTRUCTABLE. BOUGHT BY ME AS  "NOS" NEW OLD STOCK FOR AN  UN RIDDEN SHOW BIKE.THESE CRANK SETS CAME AS STANDARD ON 1985 TO 87 "HARO" MASTER FREESTYLERS ENOUGHT SAID.

His spelling wasn't very good.  Anyway it says its a conversion kit for a 3 pc crank.

Thats about it.  I know nothing about cranks.  Apart from changing one 1 pc crank I have never had any problems with them.   I was pretty lightweight BITD plus I never had access to any Quaterpipes etc, etc.  Just homemade ramps built out of any scrap timber was lying around.

Did anyone produce 1/2" 3 pc cranks or did they always stick to the 1/2" 1pc, 9/16 3pc crank rule?

Thanks

i think there were a couple of firms that made 1/2" threaded 3pc cranks
but can't for the life of me remember who

you can get sealed bearing kits for 1pc cranks
