Skyway T/A 25th Anniversary in OSS Racing?
« on: February 11, 2008, 07:31 PM »
A stupid question coming up and I fully expect the answer to be NO, but I have to ask.

I have my name on the list for the 25th Anniversary Skyway T/A frame & forks.  They just got back to me with a provisional price of around $500

According to the blurb.   This frame and fork is to be built up with tubing from BITD.
It is to be welded the same, geometry same, everything the same apart from a sticker saying 25th Anniversary.
http://www.coloredtuffs.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=25

Anyway Could this frame and fork along with all other OS Components qualify this bike to be run in the OS Racing Series.

I know the answer is NO.  But do you see my point.  It is an OS Frame & Fork!!!

There is no advantage between this frame and a old frame in good condition.  Its not like modern PK's and Quad Vs The old PK's and Quad's.

All the Tubing is 25 years old. Its not new tubing.  Only the welding is new.   What if you rewelded an old T/A?

I would just like a healthy debate on this topic because I would buy one, but if I can't race it whats the point in buying it.

Just before I finish, I know the answer will be NO.   I am looking opinions on this subject not just answers i.e "NO"

Thanks

My opinion Ian is,
if it's 1" headset and caliper brakes  ( no canti lever lugs ) it qualifies no contest in my eyes ,for OS racing

Can't wait to see 'em  :smitten:

lucky bugger  ;)

Why don't you just buy a used one from the UK if your going to race it? by the time you've paid for shipping and had the TAX man ream out your eyeball sockets, you must be looking £400+

You could get a nice used chrome one for that.

Look Mr Burgandy,  I'm a big fan and I love that hair, but thats not the question.

I am only on a waiting list for the Skyway T/A, I could easily drop out.   Even the colortuff shop rep who emailed said there was a long waiting list and many people would drop out before the frames are ready.

Theres a chrome T/A on ebay that got 6 days left and Its already up to £360.

My point is what makes a bike "old school".

Thats the debate.

does it have a 1inch threaded headset
caliper brakes
if so it seems legal

but if you want to know if its an old school bike , then no it isnt

its a welded recently aniversary TA

Its ok to race in the old school class. no question. they are just a normal TA just welded up a bit late.

Skyway got some frame sets welded up in 2002 and I was sent one by Bart at Skyway, I raced it in the alans old school series they year after.

Hey Bren, remember what we spoke about on the phone  ;D

Totally legal to race OSS, I do have to ask why though? keep it nice, theres plenty of good OS race frames about without letting bmx 796 run his pedals down it :daumenhoch:

If REDLINE were to remake your frame and fork at a sensible price would you buy one and race it?

I think you would and should

My name has only been on the list since the beginning of January.

So I am well down the pecking order.

But then again, I haven't committed to buying one yet.

I'll have to see what turns up between now and then!

My name's been on the list for almost a year. Luckily I had an Email from Ed letting me know I had a frameset with my name on in the pipeline.  :daumenhoch:

That is being built in my head as we speak.

My names been down for over a year now, had a couple of emails last year confirming I made the list, just waiting for an invoice :smitten:

If they were very good, and not limited editions then I would consider it. But my race bike is not in great condition and still has a few scars from my racing on it. I wouldnt want to abuse a sweet nos frame set if im honest :daumenhoch:

if the 25 year T/A is ok, then would it be ok to race a 25th year anniversary Aero Pro burner?

Same again imho. As long as it has a 1" threaded headset, and caliper brakes then it fits the rules.

Beard raced his a few times last year and did ok on it, but tbh that really has crap geometry. But if you enjoy it, then why not :daumenhoch:

well..... to be be official about it..... these frames were to be the 1986 production frames.  The tubing was cut, formed, and the rear stays were already welded together on most of them.  Skyway decided to go full on with freestyle line at that point, and did not have these frame and forks welded up at that time.  They were just put on hold.. until now.

We're just a few weeks away from welding up the first 50 framesets, and I'll start emailing people that asked to be put on the waiting list at that time to see who really wants one.

So.... I think this should be ok to race.  The only thing new to this frame will be the beads of weld and the powder coating!
