S&M Dirtbike
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:28 PM »
hi all,

i got this from the US in december and it arrived today gave it the coke & foil polish which brought it up a treat,

serial # SMD 7382

it has a couple of small grind marks on the left chainstay but aside from that in excellent condition.

i got the forks of Alex for another build, but i saw this on ebay and thought $70 was a bargain,

would like to build it up with the S&M pads, seat, 1" redneck.......... like DSD's chrolmes :smitten:

any advice parts wise would be welcome :)

Nice one, looking great.

For those forks you need a 1" clamp on redneck and not a 1" shafted redneck. Only an S&M stem will fit them unless you shim it (cos they are less than 1") and if you are doing that you might as well get a 1 1/8th redneck and shim that out.

I might have one of those headtube stickers if you want it, just to tidy it up a little more.

Can you try to take a good photo of the frame decal, just to add to the record.

Good find!  :daumenhoch:

this is the best decal

i've not seen any 1" clamp on redneck stems for sale so i take it they are hard to get hold of, will keep an eye out for a 1/18,

the headtube decal would be awsome Alex :daumenhoch:

thanks
rob :)

I used to have a 1" mensural stem (same shape as challenger and race stem) but I dont know where that went. Ive now got a 1" clampon redneck that was a luck find on a bike off ebay. Rory has got the only other one Ive seen come up for sale, apart from one that was with a set of forks like yours, and went for silly money. So yes ... they are hard to find. 1 1/8 rednecks come up all the time so you would just need to make a shim for it to fit (I think Harris has done this?).

I will dig the headtube sticker out and keep it safe till we next meet up.

I will put it in my toolbox but make sure you remind me, I might well forget to give it to you.

Its always hard to pin those down cos they made them for quite a few years. Like Dan said, I will check my serial numbers list and that might give an idea. It looks like one of the later 1" Dirtbikes. The early ones had 2 dropouts stuck together, Im guessing your one is one thick one (you can usually see the join inside the wheel slot)

thanks Dan, would like to know what year so i can get the right bits for it ;)

will do Rory :daumenhoch:

if anyone can help with a redneck stem 1" or 1/18  :)

yeah as far as i can tell the dropouts are one peice (wheel slot looks smooth), in the e-bay desciption the owner estimated 1995,

was they made from 92-98 ?

The mk2 dirtbike was from 92/93ish. The early mk2s still had the 2 dropouts stuck together and there were a few versions of plates and tubes at the BB and seat stay brace, but the frame was pretty much unchanged for several years (Ive got one that is the same as most, but it doesnt have the gussett at the headtube/downtube??). In 96ish they changed to "Oversized" 1 1/8th.

I think the decals on yours were a later ones decal so 95 sounds about right for it.

Nice Dirtbike! I always thought those stickers were a later model too, but alot of others believe them to be from around 93. I'm not too sure...

Those 1" clamp on Rednecks are super hard to find. You're more likely to find a 1" threaded Pitchfork and shafted Redneck sooner.

As for parts advice, I'd say skip the S&M logo seat. They weren't really made until around 1999 anyways.  :daumenhoch: Also, a skinwall Comp III up front and one of those GT logo tires on the back would rule!

thanks, the advice on the seat, it's spot on for me, i like the logo seat but they looked too modern to me for my bike, what would you and all recommend (parts list please)

i have some hp48 wheels i can fit or araya super 7x ??

Oh yes, I nearly got one of them, I think General Lee might have got one as well. Great price but the postage was quite high.

That will be fine, and shimming it wont be too hard.
