(The?) 3 types of S&M Slam bars
« on: January 15, 2008, 12:04 AM »
I am still no closer to working out the years and all the types of slam bars, but I got given a set last week (thanks subversion) so I thought Id take this pic of the ones Ive got.

As far as I can tell, the earliest ones are the bottom ones, the “Woody Itson” slams. They are very big and high and the side bars are very square with a large gap between the bends at the bottom.

The middle set are much lower and the side bars are at much more of an angle.

The top set are “dancing man” slams and are close to the modern slams.

I have got a few sets of each shape but most of them are still slightly different to each other, even tho its clear which of the 3 they are closet to.

Hope this helps, feel free to post any more pics of any more shaped slams

The early ones are very big.

I dont have a set of new slams so Im not totally sure, but I will take more pics of them with a tape measure behind them or something.

A few of people i rode with in the early 90s including Jon Pratt had the (Mark 2?) Slams, i've never seen those big ones before they're pretty mad!

My first set were dancing man slams and i used the same set for 10 years.

...not too keen on the new slams though the crossbar is thinner and they just don't look as good.

Are you sure its the SLAMS that have the thinner cross bar? It was always the lighter race/challenger bars that had thinner walled tubing and smaller crossbar. I guess they are all "Race" XLT bars now.

Here's my Big Old Slams that are on my Holmes now, and a set of yellow Slam Dancer ones.

Some Slam Bar Specials.  ca. 1999.  Note massive cross bar.

Alex, i think chris had those early bars by everyone, CW, GT etc etc.  I reckon there are many many different shapes and Chris also tweaked bars as and when relative to what he/riders/customers wanted.

You really are an s&m fruitcake mate, i love it!!

Now there's an understatement  ;)

Here are my earliest Slam bars, with the good ol' VDC Woody Allens just for comparison. Note the low cross bar and wider area around the stem, just the right thing to put on an early Holmes

Hi Craig. To me, those old bars of yours look like the ones I have in the middle. Not as high as the ones at the bottom. They are in cracking condition, nice one!

Its also clear how close to VDC Itsons the early slams were. Your Itsons look almost the same as my massive slams.

Here is a little Itson bar story: A mate of mine always used Itsons in the early 90s. As the fassion for cut down bars was in full effect he wanted to lose some width but there isnt much grip room on Itsons, and he couldnt really cut them down. So he cut them in half! Right through the middle of the cross bar and stem clamp area. Then he trimmed off an inch or so off each side, and weld them back together! Nothing that the stem and a handlebar pad didnt cover up!

:'( :'( the thought of Itson bars being cut in half... no wonder I can't get hold of another pair!

Like Clive said S&M bar production seems like it was real random, with several firms making them and with Moeller's vague recollections of the past it's gonna be tough trying to pin down which are the oldest style.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I think Mr Ruck still has them ... and a few other pairs too. His Dirt Bros style TA was never without a tuff or 2, GT stem and itson bars.

Like Ed Ro's bike in Ride Like a Man - seems to be a red Dirt Bike/Mad Dog with Woody bars... can't beat 'em

anyway, back on topic
