Redline Experts - Help Needed
« on: December 26, 2007, 01:07 PM »
Can anyone identify the frame/bike that Greg Grubbs was riding on the cover of BMX ACTION in 1982?

Any other related info/scans really welcome too...  :daumenhoch:

Just thought i would do something a little different and have a go at this build...

Anyway, Greg just made the U.S ABA "Hall Of Fame" as well for 2007 here's their write up..

Quote
GREG GRUBBS: Greg was the first racer from Nebraska to make a name for his self on the national circuit. Not only was he fast, he was the hero to many racers that wore glasses and he was well known for his sense of humor. Greg started racing in 1976, turned Pro at age 15 in 1980, then won the ABA Cornhusker National in the 16 expert class, back when you could race Pro and expert in the same day. In 1981, he won 12 ABA single A races, while riding for SE Racing in the summer. He won the Jag World Championships in A Pro and Pro Open in 1981. In 1982, he was picked up by Redline and won his first race for his new sponsor in Orlando , Florida as AA Pro. He was featured on the December ‘82 BMX ACTION cover. He finished the ‘82 season as the #3 Pro behind the Patterson Bros. In 1983, Greg was dropped from Redline and began wearing a jersey that stated “FREE AGENT”. In the summer of ‘83, he was the first instructor/counselor at the Woodward Training Center along with Mike Miranda, Mike Poulson and Joe Baumert. He briefly rode for JAG BMX. He rode for Hyper BMX from mid-1984 to end of 1985, until owner Billy Farrell was killed in an auto accident. He retired in 1986. From ‘86 to ’90, he attended the University of Nebraska , where he received his B.A. in Anthropology. He made a comeback in 1990 by winning first race back as A Pro at the Mid-West Nationals. In 1991, he blew out his knee at the Mile High Nationals and retired permanently. He was the on-camera talent for the ABA BMX TV Show “Pump”. Greg currently lives in Los Angeles where he works on commercial production and works for the TV show Motocross Files.

I've managed to get hold of an old video of him racing indoors in 82 just when he'd been sponsored by Redline and he completely smashed all the other big name pros on the gate with a blazing holeshot..and we're talking Stu,Brackens and the great Greg Hill as well.

As Ron said,i think its been said he was just a bit of a dosser and didnt really take things seriously enough as far as Redline were concerned, yet when i spoke to Greg he said he was really cut up when they let him go.

The whole thing about Greg reminds me of Geth Shooter a bit.

Anyway,Back to the bike, its gonna be hard nailing down the definitive Grubbs replica machine, but Greg himself has mentioned that one of the highlights of his Bmx career was making the cover of BMXA (i put on my first post above), so with little else info available,i see that as my best option.

So..I can pretty much guarantee they used Suntour parts (stem, headset, seatpost clamp, hubs etc) as the Factory Team were sponsored by them obviously & of course the legendary Flight cranks as well, So it hopefully should be a fairly easy build to source.Just need to establish things like rims,tyres,pedals,bars,pads,brakes,f+f....Feck! Everything  ;D

I have had the privelege of getting to know Greg Grubbs this year, culminating with our induction into the Hall of Fame.

On one of the nights after the the HOF ceremony, Grubbs, Joe Baumert (long time friend of Greg and old school racer), Cash Matthews, and myself, sat in my room watching "Joe Kid on a Stingray" (they wanted me to narrate). Then we watched the race someone else mentioned where Greg kicked butt.

As for Greg and his demise at Redline, he was into the "Punk Rock" sceen and the team manager was a Texas redneck.

Funny turn of events; Greg now has long hair and mine is short. On our HOF plaques his picture has short hair and mine has long. :)

Greg is a very fun and funny guy, we had a great time.

WoW.
What can i say? I've only  recently joined RAD so missed this topic on Dennis
http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=38013.0

Just spent the best part of an hour reading through it. Fantastic!  :daumenhoch:

As i'd been looking over the net about Redline back in the day, came across this http://www.navada.net/univofbmx/univofbmx/f5_2007_aba_reunion.htm and what a fantastic group shot of all the 'Redliners' past and present.

@ Dennis: I really had wondered about this guy they called the "Red Baron" while researching this and thanks to the great guys and gals here at RADBMX and your goodself have topped up my BMX knowledge banks from the mid late 70's/very early 80's.

Thanks for posting the ABA Hall Of Fame pic above.Superb and Well Done!

Got me thinking a Grubbs Replica and a 'Red Baron' 600 project for '08.  ::)

hey Brandy, you seen this :smitten:

This is Greg Grubbs' personal Redline MXII from 1977.  This was the first year of Redline frames after production of the Squareback ended, so it has the front triangle and gussett of a Squareback and the rear triangle and dropouts of a Proline.  The serial number is 11094.  There aren't many of these around.  It is in very good condition, with a few scratches and rough spots, but no rust.   The paint is original and would clean up nicely.  It has no decals other than the Lincoln, Nebraska 77/78 bicycle license.  The chain is an original, nickel plated D.I.D. which is a nice find as well.   This is your chance to own a piece of BMX history from Nebraska's finest (and eventual Redline factory rider), Greg Grubbs.
