Early Dirt Bike
« on: December 20, 2007, 04:52 PM »
Just spotted this on another forum, the guy reckons it was Will Smyth's old ride. Interesting frame with no gussets and has 5/8" rear tubes that are welded lower down the seat post than normal. Looks a good 'un and nice hubs too  8)

Only hope the guy doesn't go too mad with the 'restoration'!

I'd leave it as is and throw some tyres on it.

I'm not sure about that Dirtbike. Canti brakes, no headtube/toptube gusset, strange headtube,...

It has the same sticker set as my 94, and I had buddy growing up that had the same Dirtbike in blue...but it was not that frame.

I'd like to know the serial number.

Guys stop fretting...it's an 89 frame repainted a few times.

Steve Geall of G Bikes fame etc. etc. welded the canti bosses on, as at the time racers were switching over.

The frame number is... 6890873 PSM.

...and I've just added more early images from 90/91 of how it looked.

Alex do you still have the copy of Invert with the full test? If so can you scan it for me?

Sure do. Its under my desk at work. I will try and do it tomorrow for ya. It will be my last chance till after Xmas cos my scanner it at work too. Maybe Email me after lunch to remind me. I will be out of the office all morning.

I think the dirtbike test issue is the one with Will doing a no hander on the cover, but the wall ride shot was from a different issue. I will check them both out and see what else is in there.

Thats the one, well done! Its a great 'BMX Action' style picture but you cant see much of the bike.

I think I sent Rick Hall a Holmes frame in 1991. I bought one back from S&M with me and posted it onto Ireland when I got back to the UK. I had no idea who it was going to, I just had a name and address to post it to.

There were quite a few different styles of early dirtbike but some of the early ones didnt have a headtube gusset and they had tube braces at the BB AND the seat stay (not plates). This bike does have very large machined rings on the headtube. My old dirtbike frame is very similar to this one but the rings are smaller.

I think the bike I bought back was Green but I didnt think it was for Will as I knew who he was.

That pic of Will is rad. Race(ish) bike, riding in a jumping comp on a BMX track, with Pegs and a bash guard. How S&M is that?!

Harris, they are Son Lites, Jon-e and I bought the last two sets from a Ducth shop at the BMX WC in Holland mid nineties.  I stupidly sold mine to biaggio a few months back and Jon-e has just realised he has them and what they're worth (damn me and my big mouth)!

However like that ESP stem project, i'm getting some copies done so sit tight......
