Allergic to Grips
« on: December 16, 2007, 08:43 PM »
Went over rOm today, 2nd time out for my son on his new bike and he is allergic to his grips. His hands come up in loads of little blisters all over his palms same thing happened last week when he rode it.
We know he is allergic to certain types of paint that schools use, So we have to supply his own to take to school with him, found this out at a young age when he was doing hand painting.
Anyone else had this problem??????

He can, but never seems to want too, even today he only put them on for about 30 mins. Made him wear them later when we rode from our house too my mums in Barking. About 6 miles????

Not good for me 100PSI and crap pavements :LolLolLolLol:

I think you might struggle to find grips made from different materials that are actually any good....  Just gonna have to train him up to wear the gloves I reckon.  Do you wear gloves yourself?

Yes, I wear gloves.
Strange thing is he has never had any problems before. Think I will contact Hoffman bikes and try and find out what they are made from, although knowing the yanks they will probably set the lawyers on me thinking I'm going to sue them.
Will also take his old grips off and fit them.

I was gonna say Latex.  And I'd assume that cheap crappy grips probably aren't, but are going to be horrible to use.  At least if Dad is wearing his gloves then it'll encourage Junior to do the same   :daumenhoch:

Better remember that in a few years time as he is only 6 now; should be a fun conversation. :-[

I work in a garage so will bring home some latex gloves for him to try once his hands have cleared up.

We do have a customer who always waits for her car and we have to be very careful that only a couple of people drive her car and we dont clean it, as she is very allergic to latex and it can send her into shock, even the powder from inside the gloves is enough. The technician has to scrub in before working on the car

Thought some grips were made of KRYON is this a form of latex?

You could always try some of the sponge type grip on his bike. I know they dont look great but if he dont like wearing gloves they may stop the problem

Good Luck  :daumenhoch:

Yes, after a morning at rOm, Did ask him if he wanted to ride there and he said yes, the sun was shining when we started but we was both frozen by the time we got there. Better than sitting in front of the telly.

Its him I want to wrap in bubble wrap.

Did get a reply from Hoffman bikes, they said they are made from Krayton rubber, and suggested that it was something the bike shop might have cleaned the bike with!
Will give the grips a quick clean with soap and water, if not new grips and watch the for sale section for lightly used grips until I find a set that are OK. :LolLolLolLol:

You could try some decent tennis / squash racket grip over the top.
