What Helmet should I get?
« on: December 02, 2007, 11:18 PM »
I checked out my protek helmet over the weekend and thought it was about time I got a new one. Its very very old, most of the padding is only just holding in there and its probably a bit smelly now.

When I got it, all there was was Protec (and copies) but now there are quite a few others. I like the style of protek (I dont want one with the peak on it) but I just wondered if anyone had any recomendations of what to get?

Check out the Bell version. I'd expect it to be decent.

If you get a Pro-Tec from the USA, it has nice foam inners and not that British Safety Standard hard polystyrene crud.

I got a pro-tec it's pretty good, but you want to try it in a shop.
I thought I measured my head right and was sure I needed large, but in the shop it was a medium that fit the best.

if you snowboard buy a snowboard specific one and the ear pads pop out, so it's multi use.

but be sure to put them back in before you find yourself on a single chair lift  over a long icy windy valley.

Yeah, I deff wanna try before I buy.

I went to my local skate shop and all they had were horrid looking snowboard helmets (I do like the ear flaps tho. My sons have snowboard helmets for their bikes and they look very cosy). There is an MTB shop near me that has protecs so I might have to go in there.

my pro tec is exactly the same as the bmx/skate ones except for the pop in ear pads...which can be replaced by ones with audio built in...nice.

this is the exact one i have, ah, also the snow one has a goggle retainer.

That one is great! Shame the shop near me didnt have any protec snowboard helmets.

The main reason I need a new one is cos I tried to cram a wooley hat under mine last weekend cos it was so cold. I ended up taking out some of the padding and all the pad fixings fell out.

I might get I need from the MTB shop and then order one of those. Or can you get JUST the ear cosys and fit them to a non snowboard protec?

the non snowboard ones don't have the poppers for the pads I don't think?

where do you live dude? there will be a snowboard place near you with these in, I got mine from BBC in Milton keynes. (bucks boarding centre, not the TV people)

Im in Oxford. The local skate/snowboard shop is SS20. They are great, just just didnt have any protecs in.

I also had a thought that the snowboard helmets have full padding inside, I think the skate/bike ones have gaps to make them less hot in the summer. Maybe I will just go with a normal protec and get some earmuffs.

you might be right, I do sweat like a pig (or something that sweats a lot since I know pigs don't actually sweat) when I wear mine.
i was dripping on Sunday...but that might have been fear as well as exertion...and being a fat f***er.

UK = Hard polystyrene / USA = Soft foam.  Might want to keep that in mind... although I think UK wakeboard helmets have foam! which is good.
