Crank help. May be simple?

Hi All,
Need help pretty urgently. My mrs has gone away and i have at last got the time to build my brother a Mongoose Cali that i had lying around.
I got hold of a NOS Takagi 170 op. The problem i have is that i am using a Sugino spider and Sugino chainring. The little arm on the crank arm that fits into the chainring is slighty lose once the crank is tightened so when you pedal you can feel some play. Its obviously wrong. It looks like the little arm is to small for the chainring hole.
Do i need to use a Takagi chainring and spider or a Sugino op?
Cheers everyone Nick.

I'm no expert....but i think you might need a Takagi spider and chain ring? other than that i have no idea?!
i thought they were all the same diameter? and that it was just the length of the spider arms that were diferent between Takagi and Sugino?

Thats what i thought. However i have never seen a 170 Takagi opc only a 175? Reckon this is the reason? Ive got a Takagi spider but just need the chainring to see if this works.
Thanks Pick. From one CFC man to another!

no worries.....try the Takagi spider......even without the chainring you should be able to see if it'll fit right

I am not sure what your saying here.
Takagi, sugino and nearly all 1 bit crank stuff should all interchange. Are you saying the locating pin on the crank arm is slopping about in the hole on the spider?
Is there loads of slop? The hole should be a lttle bigger to let the locating bit in and then you tighten the bearing cup thing up against it and it should hold it tight.

Twill be fine with the sugino, mr.munners.
Yes the hole on the spider is slightly bigger, but once nipped up it'll be ok.
You are only pedalling forwards, so it will sit against the pin on the crank.

i got the impression it was the main hole that the crank arm goes through that's bigger? not the small hole that stops the spider from spinning??

I think they are all a bit of a loose fit. I always had a bit of movement on mine as I had a coaster brake but it should be ok once the bearing cup is tight up against it.
