ESP stem project - now with pictures
« on: November 19, 2007, 05:45 PM »
Hi all, here's the pictures of the sample stem.  For those that didn't read the original thread, i'm getting some repro ESP stems made that will CLEARLY not be able to be sold as originals. I've got to get a small batch made, please PM me if you're interested in one.  Cost wise they will be £90 including recorded post. These stems are for a few builds between friends and family but i can't just get a few made so need to sell some to make it happen. They are polished but if you want one anodized or mirror polished, that can be done for £10.

Spec wise they are visually identical to an ESP but all bolts and threads are metric.  This one has flying w bmx on the front but the production batch will not as i want to make them LESS like the originals to not upset or devalue original ESP stems out there. They will be laser etched on the shaft with REPRODUCTION and a date of manufacture. The shaft is stainless and seems to be harder than the original material of an ESP but the head and shaft will be threaded and bonded together.

This shaft is 6" like the originals but as you can see from the pictures, the original ESP was butchered down as the long shafts didn't fit in a lot of forks so production stems will have a shorter shaft, approx 5".

I'm also doing this to make a clamp on ESP for my floval, those i'll sell if anyone wants one, price wise they should be around £60, flippable for cruisers too with ESP on both sides and hopefully a bit deeper so when flipped you don't see the bottom of the bolts.

First and second pic: original donor stem from Pete Middletons old bike (cut dwn shaft) and the repro.

third pic: repro exploded

funny Gogo, the last time i went to the ABA Grands was when Dale was on Nirve and Gary Ellis was the Team manager, we all went out for pancakes one morning and i'm just sitting opposite Ellis thinking all kinds of crazy Huffy/Kuwahara trivia but shy as a 5 year old so never said owt!

Anyway, you buying? I'll trade in my old BAD card for a fiver off one?

Ah, i've been thinking on this one dingodude, if the stem is flippable with ESP on both sides, what way up do you do the Flying W on the front?  I was gonna drop the flying W for this reason and also keep it like the quilled one.  I am planning to make the baseplate a bit thicker so that the bolts can do thier job without coming through the bottom so it looks sweeter flipped. Your thoughts?  Also with a 28.6 hole through the middle it's gonna be a bit shorter than the quilled version.  I've scrapped the idea of making it look like a quilled stem or having a built in flexfighter but still would like the clamping mechanism not a big slit and bolt in the back, it's gotta look clean, pay himage to the OG.

sounds good to me

I currently run an older version of these (more square in shape/ less intricate machining)

http://www.alansbmx.com/product_info.php?cPath=38_97&products_id=1029

and think they are almost perfect  except when run flipped you can see the bolt headsi
It would be much better if you use the same system but with the bolts coming in from the other (more traditional) way so bolt heads are hidden when flipped

I read somewhere that they did 4 versions, i think that ebay one is #2 and the one i'm 'ripping off' is the first one. I think the one with the 'flying w' on the top is the last one they did.
