Myth or truth?
« on: November 08, 2007, 02:05 PM »
Just came to me... I remember when I was a kid and there was this rumour that went round that if your skyway was buckled then you could wack it in the freezer to straighten it. Is that totally bollox or not? LMK  ;)

Bollox

oh and them coded stereos, they can be sorted by chucking em in the freezer too

and an Ebay ad this week for a Burner with a buckled mag said it could be straightened by putting it in the oven.  :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

actually its a true myth since skyways mere made from a dupont plastic.
by changing the core temp the plastic reverts to its original moulding shape.

same as if you heat up a yogurt pot it goes back into a disk shape in which it started life

So heating will work but freezing won't?

but not too hot eh, unless you want your skyway to look like a plastic puddle.

I have to be honest, zytec is not a material I know too much about but I think that freezing them should do the trick.
no longer than 24-36 hours should be needed and i am not sure that after they defrost if they will hold their original straight shape ... but they should defiantly revert to their original during the freezing part

Its the thermo memory of plastic that this is based on

Yeh its what is known as a thermoset, can find its way back to its origin, thermoplast on the other hand doesn`t,if someone gave you directions to a place and there were say 50 instructions ,left, left again second on the right, first left straight on ...you get the idea...you probably woudn`t find your way back..exactly the same for this type of plastic, can`t find its origin...!!!!

i don't know what skyways are actually made up of but either way i can't see it working

thermosets will heat up and burn, it doesn't flex, hence thermoset.

thermoplastic will heat up and go floppy before melting, to re-true a wheel it would have to be heated correctly then put back into the proper mould to get its shape

thermomemory refers to the amount of elasticity in the plastic once set. to a point it will spring back, after that the material will stretch and change its density but won't be able to find its 'original state' through heating or freezing

I always believed it to be a myth.  Take a buckled Skyway off the bike, remove the tyre and tube and hang the wheel up by the axle in your shed/lounge/bedroom for a few days and it might relax back into shape. Thats about it though   :)

its complete and utter bollox in regards to the freezer.

dont ask me how i know...lol

but i would say that heat may work if the wheel were put into a jig.

I did, but I didn't have Skyways.  My step-father was a master butcher so we had a large chest freezer in the garage.  Not sure it would have been appreciated if they found a set of wheels sitting on top of the meat though.
