Fork change problem
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:07 PM »
I changed the forks on my 06 Sport today and the new forks do not have the welded in bolt in the top which you screw the brake cable guide into, I believe it also holds the stem onto the forks?
Am I making sense and is there a modified part I can buy for this so I dont have to use my original forks?

I can add pics if it helps??

Cheers :)

does the bolt from your old forks fit?

i found this out the long way too.... you don't actually need the bolt formally known as the hollow stem bolt. this is now called a fork bolt i believe...

all that bolt does is holds your stem down before you tighten it.  once your stem is tightened, then you can take the bolt off and stick it back on your old forks.  but not all bolts will fit all size forks.  but you can buy these bolts seperately.

That's the kiddie!  from what you're saying you need to hammer in the star nut thingy into the top of the forks......the best way of doing this is to screw in the bolt into the nut........then get it as square on the top of the forks as poss and whack it with a hammer.....you can then hammer the top of the bolt to square it up (as it will go in a bit p*ssed)

oh and Trev....if they wrok the same as the MTB headsets you DO need the bolt as this pre loads the headset and stops it working loose.
