This is a very sad story.  He committed sucide soon after.  Do a search and watch some more Winkelmann stuff, the bloke was a ruler. Check out my post in the 'holy sh1t' thread.

No one went bigger than Colin for a good long while. Mad lines, arguably the first ever double backflip back in about 95, huge transfer gaps and stuff.

I'm still gutted he's gone.

Colin Winkelmann  R.I.P.

I didn't realise that was the same guy.

I wonder how bad things have to be before you decide to take your own life.

I suppose we'll never know.  He gassed himself in his car.  The rumours were that he was off his bike recovering from that rampvan slam and his legs weren't looking like they were going to heal and he had girlfriend problems at the same time.

All I know is he left a bloody big hole.

In some ways I'd like to know more about it, in others I'm glad I don't y'know?

Through the 90s I would look forward to each copy of Props, and for sure virtually every one would have Colin doing summat massive. That's how I'll remember him.   I can't watch that rampvan clip.

That guy was one of my favourite riders, by a large margin.

I remember watching the Samurai video a short time before he took his own life and he seemed such a good character. Looked like he would've been a lot of fun to hang out with.
It was so hard to believe that things had got to that stage.
I also saw another video for the first time shortly after his death, think it was by DK and also Fly Bikes' distributors and it included that crash. In the extras on the dvd, it shows some more footage of it and also has a bit of an interview with Colin whilst he is recovering afterwards. It's real hard to watch that now.

Props did a bit of a compilation in one of their issues after, which was a nice touch and , like twobobrob has already said, he was always trying something massive. Some of the clips they included were just mental!

Nate Wessell and Allan Cooke did a re-run of the trick last year as a tribute to Colin. That must've been an emotional time for all who were there for the first one...

Brian.
