Dingo, cool news, saw Stephens dad and bro yesterday at Ross Hills funeral, they say he's doing well.

Maybe we should start a new thread, post a pic of your vans to thanks vans and show them how much we all dig them! I'll get me camera out.....

Come on Joe, fairs fair. Vans didnt have to give Steven anything, not matter how much they have got in the bank. Sure, they get the name about from it but they have still stood by him through this. Its posible that other companies might not have.

A few have to be fair

I know Dc raised quite a bit through the raffles of a few of the DC bikes and donated as well

it seems right that the companys who make the money from the sport should support him

who did he ride for in the past ?

I think I read that Vans paid for quite a bit of the stuff that has happened already. Air transfer to the new place he is at, and Im sure a few other thing too.

 :daumenhoch:

its nothing to do with the shoe company for me dordy,
you've got to admit after all the promo work steve did for vans in the past "raising" the price of a second hand ford focus is hardly generous i it?

how many millions of dollars do vans make in a year?

£50k would be more appropriate!

In the UK I think Stephen rode for Titan and Haro.

In the US - Nirve, GT, Mongoose/Hyundai.  I believe he was unsponsored at the time of his accident.

As Alex said above, I think Vans have also made other contributions like paying for Stephen and his family to be airlifted from his first hospital to his current hospital in Denver.

Anyone who has helped Steve deserves some props, from the people who organised and raced at/attended the MK race to the people who donated personal items (e.g. Dale Holmes, Geth Shooter, Dylan Clayton) to the big companies who have made financial donations.

10k is 10k.

Also remember Steve got paid by his sponsors too, I wondor what Oakley have done as they stood by Lance Armstrong when he had cancer and Oakley used Steven hard on promo. I remember seeing a big poster of Steve in an Oakley store in America and thought, 'bloody hell. little steven murray the geordie titan rider!'

I donated to his fund on the condition that I get it back with interest out of the winnings from his first ride back......

Anyways, nice one vans, I'm glad Awesome shoes never took off!  (You'll be REAL old school if you get that!!!)

Check out the shoes I got on a trip to the USA in the early 90s. I dont think I paid over $15 for any one pair!

(Ive still got the checked slip ons and the chukkas. The Cukkas are my "smart" shoes ... and they dont get worn much! haha)

What's the story behind Awesome shoes then?  They look virtually the same as Vans Hi Tops (I think I have bought a new pair of Vans Sk8 Hi every year since about 1992).

It was something like the guy who started Vans (Jim D) left Vans and started Awesome shoes. I dont know if he went back to vans or what, maybe Clive knows more.

It all made me think of a rider named Jeff Crawn who had a similar paralizing accident in 92. A good mate of Taj Mihelich, Jeff was paralized from the neck down thanks to his forks (LG's i think) snapping.

While what's happened to Steven sucks, he's fortunate that BMX is so prominent and so much cash is being pumped into it right now.

Jeff had huge medical bills and while fellow riders tried their best to help, i don't think the costs were covered leaving Jeff and his family in financial dire straits.

I don't know if Jeff made a recovery, i'd like to find out, does anyone know? Chris J.?

Don't really know where i'm going with this but i'm with Joe on the paltry sum donated by Vans, lads like Steven make these companies a lot of money.

It blows my mind that riders at the top of the game making millions of dollars don't have iron-clad insurance packages!

Rant over i'll shut up now.

I remember the Jeff Crawn thing at the time. It was real bad. I think that BMX was so small when he had his crash that no-one would have drempt of getting large sums of $$$ from bike companies.

Id like to know what happened with Jeff too.

I was also amazed that Steven didnt have a sports insurance package. Do any pro BMXers have insurance that covers them on their bike?

Matt Hofman did, or does, you only have to read `Ride of my Life `to see how valuable insurance is  :crazy2:

Vans did pay for his transfer from the 1st hospital to the specialist one he`s in now, and I would have thought that would be way in excess of $10,000  :daumenhoch:
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Spoke to steves dad at ross hills funeral on monday, seems he's got some moment in a thumb and has been breathing off of the ventilator a  lot more.

I think stevens case has highlighted the need for pro medical insurance and also the need to pad up more.  The fs mx riders are pretty armoured up, seems like a lot of jumpers still reckon a t shirt and piss pot is gonna work if they get a double flip wrong....

Awesome shoes? yep one of the Van Doren clan (not Jim if i recall) set up a rival company to vans and it flopped big style. Keith Duly told me he has a pair of Vans Breakers at home, anyone seen those beasts before? Hilarious!
