Best way to clean old school used tyres
« on: September 28, 2007, 09:50 AM »
Chaps, I know you must think that i'm a complete  :idiot2: (just wash them you're thinking!) but what's the best way to get really old tyres cleaned up? I have this old set on my goose which has good tread but the rims of the tyres I just can't sort out that dirt and years of wear. Anyone have any magical formula to clean them up but also prevent any damage to them?

Also same with white wall old school tyres too, have a set of those on my Raleigh Aero which could do with a good cleaning too!

Ta in advance,

Riz  :daumenhoch:

i take it you've tried hot soapy water and a scrubbing brush?  also if the tyres are for a show bike only and not for riding, you could use WD40 to bring out the shine of the tyre?

I may be wrong but others will be able to help......there should be some good products in Halfords for doing this??

nail polish remover.

you're bound to have some lying around I'm sure.

give it a try on an old one first, just to be sure you haven't got some super strong rubber melting stuff.

i use flash liquid on mine.
and a good toothbrush lol.

takes a bit of scrubbing but they come up nice and it dont knacker the side walls up if there a bit old.

then you want to give them a good soaking in amourall car dash cleaner the gloss one.
that really blings em up.

and the missus wont kill you for getting wd40 oil stains all up the floor lol.

I use Astonish paste for cleaning tyres, a big tub is about £5, put some on an old toothbrush, wet slightly and scrub away.  Really ace results.
