i can't think of anyway that you can!

i'm assuming you want to drop a shafted stem into 1"1/8' forks or am i mixed up. the problem wouldn't be with a shim, the problem would be locking the headset down

Or do you wanna run a shafted 1" stem in threaded (shafted) 1 1/8 forks?

Ive done that on some threaded 1 1/4 forks. (MTB frame and forks, BMX stem). I just made a massive shim out of ally.

Right this is where you all lose interest ......... 

Its on a beach cruiser that needs 'customising'  , A bmx just isn't cricket when out with the family, I can't keep up    ....so I imported this......







Its currently got a 25.4 handlebar stem but I want to swap it for one that will take some big arse apehanger bars.  The poxy little stem on it at the moment won't cut the mustard.  So I was going to get one of these off of ginny ?






Any ideas?............Are you even still there ?

they're threaded forks from the look in the pic. stick a shim in there like alex said and your laughing all the way down the promenade

When "over sized" first came out (not on BMX's) there were 2 sizes: 1 1/8 and 1 1/4". They both still used shafted stems and threaded headsets, and still had the same problems of stear tube bends due to the restrictions of an internal stem shaft. 1 1/4 was for your full on down hill MTBs and 1 1/8 was for cross country MTBs. When A-head came out, it solved the problems of bending headtubes so everyone ended up going with 1 1/8th (after trying clamp on 1" as well).

I have got a MTB that is 1 1/4 threaded and I use it for riding around on. I didnt like the very long reach stem it came with so I put a BMX stem on it ... with a massive shim.

You can get a shafted "converter stub" that wedges into a threaded fork like normal, but there isnt any head to it. you can then clamp on any A-head stem you like. You might not get a cool looking one like the ones you pictured, but its another option.

Yes my first MTB was a 93 Kona Lava Dome & this had a 1 1/4 threaded forks & a 1 1/4 quil stem so they do make them, but you may have to hunt a while to get one.

what sort of year we talking about? i first started work in a bike shop in the summer of 96. i remember the canondales using 1 1/4. they probably still do! i know some downhill companies use 1 1/4 now but most are 1 1/8. we were only just heading into the realm of the clamp on stem so it must be around thenish. a guess at 93/94 maybe? educate me alex!
