RUSTED IN SEAT POST REMOVAL???
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:56 AM »
I'm sure you've all suffered this at some point over the years with a rust shaft stuck in the hole. So what's the best way of removing them. I've tried the obvious. spray loads of WD round the edge and trying to working out with mole grips but hasn't budged at all.

Any suggestions welcome.

steel - plus it's not a chrome seat post, it was a painted post.

can you soak it in diesel?

i put my frame in a big box, plastic liner, left it in diesel for a week.

then the post in the vice, and twist the frame.

heat can help too.

another method is to cut it off at the frame level, and put a hacksaw blade in the tube and cut it into 1/4's, then chisel it out. extremely time consuming though.

Cheers OSF.  :4_17_5:

I'll try the diesel method 1st as don't really want to start hacking at my VDC gorila in case I get carried away and bugger the frame.

all good advice, worked for me :daumenhoch:

the warpig i just got had a post fully seized in there, soaked in diesel for 3 days, try feeding some through the expansion hole in the bb with the frame turned upside down,
so it runs down onto the bottom of the seatpost,
then put the seat post in the vice, and use the frame to get leverage, tiny bit at a time,

we had to put the blowtorch on the warpig frame like, we heated up the seat tube till it was near glowing and it eventually let go :daumenhoch:

Sounds crazy but you can hit the tube further down into the frame to loosen it (depending on how much is protruding). If you don't want to save the post drill a hole through it and put a bolt through the hole, that way it can't go in too deep when you whack it.
Works for me

if all else fails you will need to get it drilled out using a piller drill,i have done a couple and got another one to do,i tried all the other methods but the seat post is made out of monkey metal and just crumbles as soon as you touch it :tickedoff:
