Change of heart for Southsea skatepark
Southsea skatepark will remain open all year round after the city council stepped in with a cash handout to keep it going.
The council will spend £42,000 keeping the popular park open throughout the winter months after a possible deal with a private contractor fell through.
Previously the council had warned the facility might have to close between October and April because it was too expensive to run and need major investment to secure its future.
Councillor Eleanor Scott, cabinet member for education, children and young people, said the change of heart was based on the strength of feeling of the young skateboarders, but could not yet say where the cash would come from.
Skaters launched The Southsea Skatepark Users' Group to fight closure and gathered 2,603 signatures in support of the cause.
‘The preferred bidder to take over the management of Southsea Skate Park formally withdrew from the negotiations,’ said Cllr Scott.
‘Negotiations have been taking place to bring investment and development to the skatepark and to ensure it provides a quality service for young people.
‘We’re committed to the future of the skatepark and will now be looking at a range of options, both internally and externally.
‘The skatepark will remain open throughout the winter and beyond.’
