Southsea Skatepark is saved!
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:27 AM »
Just found a group on facebook with news of the park being saved by the council - is this old news? i havent seen anything on Rad, although i've been on hol surfing in barbados :) - i'm going to southsea on sunday for a ride  :daumenhoch:

HOPE EVERYONE IS PLEASED TO HEAR...

Change of heart for Southsea skatepark

Southsea skatepark will remain open all year round after the city council stepped in with a cash handout to keep it going.

The council will spend £42,000 keeping the popular park open throughout the winter months after a possible deal with a private contractor fell through.

Previously the council had warned the facility might have to close between October and April because it was too expensive to run and need major investment to secure its future.

Councillor Eleanor Scott, cabinet member for education, children and young people, said the change of heart was based on the strength of feeling of the young skateboarders, but could not yet say where the cash would come from.

Skaters launched The Southsea Skatepark Users' Group to fight closure and gathered 2,603 signatures in support of the cause.

‘The preferred bidder to take over the management of Southsea Skate Park formally withdrew from the negotiations,’ said Cllr Scott.

‘Negotiations have been taking place to bring investment and development to the skatepark and to ensure it provides a quality service for young people.

‘We’re committed to the future of the skatepark and will now be looking at a range of options, both internally and externally.

‘The skatepark will remain open throughout the winter and beyond.’

Before everyone gets exited the truth is abit less encouraging, the £42k
the council are talking about is for WAGES for the staff nothing will
change. The head of the council admitted to the steering group that they
didnt want anything to do with the place so there wont be any improvements
at all, we will be lucky to get another £50 for paint at the moment. Sorry to
be so negative.

It does sound like the council are expecting a big pat on the back for keeping it open on a shoe string - wonkers

One of the bowls needs fixng after a fire in it, and some of the wood ramps could do with a resurface, Mark Webb has built a few of the subboxes etc

I'm just glad its staying open whatever condition its in, i went there as a kid i'd like my boy to go in a few years time, like all the young ROM kids go with their dads :daumenhoch:

stace i went to a silent rave at glastonbury, it was well funny - it had 2 dj's one playing techno, the other metal, it made for some odd dancing to watch!
