Im not sure that just by being light, made it the best!! I cant imagine the carnage if I rode a race inc, although very light, just would not stand up to the abuse
A long time ago, in a land far away!

I think this is a toughy to answer. At would depend on which early era we are talking about. I personal think you would be hard pushed to find a better all round race frame than the Skyway TA... light and strong!!! Earlier than that my personal preference was the Redline MXII.. but I was small back then and it probably wouldn't have suited a larger rider.... again though, light and strong!

Maybe I'm biased though... I have both..... he he!!!

i just sold my 1985 GT pro before i could weigh it. out of the 13 frames i had it was easily the lightest including the DB medium pro. redline mxII's weren't in the same league, mxIII's were a bit better  :daumenhoch:
i'm hoping my redline proline comes in under 25lbs. if it does i'll be happy  ;)

Ahhhhh GT... what u on about????
The Redline MXIII frameset was exactly the same as the MXII frameset apart from the oval stamp on the BB... and the early MXII had slightly smaller rear dropouts! So how is one better than the other????? Plus it's unfair to compare a 1980 frameset to a 1985 frameset!!! GT framesets were nice lookin but notorious for breaking easily in my day..... never saw a broken MXII and I hammered mine!!!! lol

John, i'd suggest you get hold of December 1982 BMXA magazine then you will find out "what i'm on about" and you can then remove the "exactly the same" remark from your post  :coolsmiley:
the relevence of comparing a '80 to a '85 frame is asked in the opening post  ;)

Ouch GT.... don't be so touchy dude! I can only recall that the MXIII was actually a printing mistake on the decals when production of the frames moved to Japan so in essence the frames were the same, just had incorrect decals that's all!
Don't have copy's of any mags so have to go from memory I'm afraid!

Sorry if I offended you GT

not touchy mate, just annoyed when people imply i don't know what i'm talking about on a public forum. anyway i'm over it. for your info John the BB and head tubes were drilled and machined out to shave weight (up to 1/2 a lb per frame) seat tube angle change and slightly longer front triangle. so other than the stickers, there really is a difference between a 1979 mxII and a 1983 mxIII frame.

No worries GT!
To be honest I knew about the drilled out tubes mate but I think we'll have to agree to differ on our thoughts as I can't really see the small pieces of metal removed from the BB and headtube equating to nearly half a pound on a frame that weighs 4lb 4oz  ;)

with a little help from some digi scales
and a whole load of components ie seat clamps, seats, posts, stems,h bars, hubs etc

i got me senior pro to just a tad over 20lbs including padset and plate

not exactly light as a feather but an improvement on the regular 22 - 24lbs out the crate for bikes bitd for instance

also i cant find the thread where the bmxa lads did the same to compare and built a super light bike like a supergroup

a little like emerson lake n palmer :2funny:
