The Torpedo hub is truly fully automatic (Unlike the Bendix "Kick-back") You got to a certain RPM and it would shift into overdrive. The jump from low to high is sudden and we messed to get them dialed constantly. Due to the weight, they finally died out
Thanks for the words

Do you have any more history on that one Rick, looks a beauty. I've had a go on one of those hubs BITD, but they weren't easy to get on with!

thanks for enlightening me. i assume that the bendix "kick back" changed as you pedalled backward??? hence, these were not available as a coaster equipped hub??? i still laugh now thinking about my mate having a go on my Stingray- he got on outside the house, rode up the pavement and as he rode off the kerb, the downward motion of the bike caused him to apply backward pressure and the brake applied, throwing him off the pedals and on to the top tube!!!!!!!!! classic! he squealed quite a lot.

Mcneal and Leary were not in the same team. I think Mcneal was bouncing between CRC and Riverside Redands Schwinn (of RRS fame) when he rode a JMC.
The two speed kickback hub was indeed a coaster brake. It made it a bit difficult to race sometimes cause if you wanted to shift, you sometimes ended up applying the brake. My Matthews mono has one of those hubs
