Correct sized allen bolts
« on: September 03, 2007, 04:05 PM »
Anyone know the correct size for allen bolts on a Western H Hutch stem? I've got the oxidized black ones, but I'm building a pink Trickstar and want some stainless steel ones. My local DIY shops don't sell 'em. Once I get the metric size I'll order them off Ebay. Thanks.

Its a massive pain I can't believe its so difficult to match 'em up. The metric size are all over Ebay, but I don't know if they are M6, M7 or M8. Argggghhhhh!!

Don't buy M8! You'll fook up the threads.........5/16 x 1" UNC is what you need.  Standard thread sizes have changed since Hutch stems were made, it all metric now (M8 for example), Unified Coarse Thread is what you need, aka American Standard, for a 5/16 bolt it has 18TPI, M8 would have 20TPI and the pitch of the thread is different (the base of the thread is thicker). The long and short is it'd fook up your stem....

I would be VERY suprised if they are metric, as alex sid some kind of unc thread normally on USA stuff (all my S&M stems and DK stems are UNC)

are there not any fastener suppliers near you you could go down and get them to try somebolts in for you?

 :) DINGO :)

They're exactly what you need and as cheap as you'll find them. My local hardware specialist wanted £40 for 8 in stainless! :daumenhoch:

I think it was Mark who pointed me in the direction of those 5/16" x 1" UNC  - and they're spot on  :daumenhoch:

Well it was really helpful, hopefully I'll get 'em tomorrow. I have a chrome Hutch stem that needs new bolts as well so if the UNC are good which I'm sure they are I'll ship some more in.
