It is with great sadness that I write this message to inform you all that Dave Young has passed away. Chris has asked that we inform those involved in BMX.

Dave was a chief referee from the early days of BMX in this country. He was also responsible for the very first rule books on Freesytle BMX which he compiled together with Bob Haro.

I hope you will join me and the guys at BADBMX in sending your wishes to his wife and family at this difficult time.

That's very sad news indeed. I only met Dave this year when he turned up at Andover with Chris and again at Dagenham. Top bloke who will be missed by many. Condolences to the Young family. Alan Humphrey

It's getting to the point in time where the organisers and pioneers are passing away. I'm finding this really sad.

Even more so as I raced with Chris (saw him again last year - first time in 20 or so years) and Dave was very well liked at our club and a real character.

My thoughts are with Chris and his family at this time

I am truly gutted by this news, Dave was a good man, fair to everyone and a good friend.
He was one of the first people I bumped into last year on my return to BMX, and talking to him it seemed like last week, not 25 years ago. One of the conversations we had was about Dave returning to BMX, possible setting up a Grass roots team, just like he did back in 1981.
Both his sons raced BMX and Chris went on to become a freestyle legend.

My thoughts go out to the Young Family.
I know words dont make it easier, but remember Dave was one of the good guys, and will be sorely missed.

I got to know Dave back in 86/87 when I was helping to get Jackswood Aces BMX track of the ground in Paddock Wood in Kent. He came down with Chris and his mum and helped get things going.Chris had long gone to freestyle was we battled each on the race track (he whipped me most the time!) he raced on an old Haro freestyler.We did loads of pics for the local paper. At one meeting Dave bought chris,some ramps and his motocross bikes down, I have pics back in the UK of Chris getting rad on a crosser years before the X games got going. Dave spoke about the ups and downs and dodgy dealings in UKBMX and how Chris had a hard time from some of the "big names" and the "in crowd" who he beat to a no1 plate in the early days of UKBMX

I found him one interesting dude, I have a pic of him doing a cruiser race at Jackswood.....anybody got any contacts with a courier company? all my pics are back in the UK in my mums loft.Need to get them on here soon.

Another great loss and another who will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.

I first met Dave back in the very early days of racing and last spoke to him at the Hawks 25th Anniversary just over a year ago. He was a great fella, full of beans and was always fair, he was also a good laugh and good company.

I think it should be stressed which Dave Young has passed away.

Don't forget we also have a Dave Young on here (Yoda) who was one of the top Pro riders in this country in the 80's. I'd hate people to think that he had passed away, especially so soon after the news of his ex-team mate, Pepi passing away only a few days ago.

I never knew Dave Young as I wasnt involved in the early race days. I do know Yoda and it stopped me in my tracks when I first read the post!

Very sad news and condolences to Chris and the Young Family.

Being a Northerner back in the day, I never knew of Dave, but certainly knew who Chris was from all the mag coverage he got. So it was an honour last year at Hayes when I got talking to an old chap and his Mrs who had parked their camper van next to my car at Hayes regional and they introduced me to their son who Dave modestly said used to "be quite good" in the early days of BMX. I felt privileged to meet a true OS legend (I later found out that Dave was just as legendary and influential as Chris, but behind the scenes rather than on the track/ramps). I think it was that chance meeting that eventually led to Chris getting back in touch with the likes of Bill Stup and doing a few races after I passed on Dave's contact details.

R.I.P. Dave. Thanks for all the contributions you made to this great sport during the early days.

What a sad day

For anyone that was around in the early days of bmx Dave was one of the most influential characters around at that time, his commitment to bmx and his sons was second to none.
If it was not for Dave and the work he put in in those early days , especilly when it came to building quarter pipes, then I never would have been able to achieve anything in bmx at all.
I stayed at Daves family house on many occasions and travelled all around the country with him and Chris, and have to say he would have done anything for Chris and his bother Andy.

He`ll be sadly missed by lots of people, especially by his family.
