Help wanted with Skyway hub
«

Me and a mate at work are rebuiding a 84 Mongoose for one of the salesmen. It was his son's Who took his own life aged 32 and he wants to pass it on to his Grandson.
We are just cleaning the skyways up and sorting the bearings etc but the freewheel assembly is very tired the teeth on the driver appear o.k but the pawls seem rounded and the spring has lost its tension to keep them pushed out.
Is there some kind of overhaul kit available or maybe some parts.
Perhaps you can tell from the pics what I need.

Im not totally sure from the pic's, but that looks like a coaster hub to me, if it is you should be able to get some replacement parts for it.
But I don't know what the first two pic's are, looks like someone has done something to it, a mod or something.

I thought the same Chris, not really sure what an old freewheel tuff looks like as I only have the new ones, and I only ever rode with a coaster bitd, but the new ones have a freewheel which screws on. By the looks of that one Mark the freewheel is part of the hub, Dave or ORB might know a bit more

Never seen that inside a coaster though Phil, has it been converted ? On all the coasters that I`ve seen the cog section has a corkscrew type thread on it that pushes the wedge on to the brake pads inside the hub. I can`t ever remember seeing that type of set-up before

freecoaster? ive never seen a bendix and dont know how they work which is why i suggested it might be one. your right about the screw thing tho bill...hmmm..odd that is. either way i would seriously doubt u would get parts for this current set up. so unless u can sort it with a Ghetto fix, the easiest solution would be to get a new one.
i have a spare freewheel hub if u need it.

It looks more like a cassete hub, but was they about that long ago?
I think your right about it needing to be renewed though Phil

I had a set of white tuffs, can't remeber who I sold em too, someone on here I think. They had an Alloy freewheel cassette type hub, not coaster though. I know it doesn't help, but they did exist. Ad

Im with you Bill, i think its a cassette hub as freewheels had a screw in adaptor. Phil is talking crap and wouldn't know a cassette hub if it smacked him in the face!

That there be a Cassette hub,
I could not be arsed to read through it all, but I think I may have one in bits somewhere. I am sure I have the sprocket.
Had a Yellow one like that but it had gone through the worst of its HIV and aids was truly set in.

That cassette is on the early versions of the tuff ii's. I have 2 sets of tuffs with the hubs. Best bet would be to buy another wheel and salvage the parts you need.

aha!
its a freewheel not a coaster, although the coasters use the same cog and c-clip
i have the same one on my yellow performer with yellow tuffs, the tuffs are really early ones with metal steel hubs not alloy hubs
i've sold all my rear hub replacement kits, but i may have a few of the cogs to fit it, if the internal are shagged then you'll need a new hub anyway
