Vander Beat
« on: July 29, 2007, 06:42 PM »
Has any one actually done a vander frame rebuild ?
For many years I have wanted to take a 85 streetbeat frame and reweld and then chrome it like the vander frame he came to the uk on in 84? ... just been too lazy.

does anyone have any pictures of this frame (not from BMXA) ?

Thanks

Mark

Craig Campbell might have some, he took a load of pics when we were on that tour, but you`ve got to find him to ask  :(

I've got a raw 'beat I was thinking of getting chromed, I have to admit. Haven't really looked into the costs yet though.

From what I understand it would take :

1 x 85 street beat frame and forks.

new front gusset
remove platform and re shape it at top of seat stays.
gusset at one or both sides of stays?
coaster tab?
rear standing pegs
New seat tube (round)
huge ammounts of pollishing (those cheap 85 frames are usually in really bad shape)
and then a chrome job

yeah thats Timo's bike aka 2fresh.
nice bike, but I have to admit i still think of vander as a skyway rider because of the bmxa article and the death tribute using the same photos in rad

Yeah, he'll always be most associated with Skyway.

I think this would need to be an outsource job .....
Only problem is most cycle builders and repairers use brass welding which would look out of place on this frame.

I know of this old frame maker down in kent, "ken james" and he does ok stuff ... but only in brass welding.
I had a pair of GT forks shortend for a pit bike , which came out good ... but would have been a problem if I had needed them chrome.

I really want a vander beat, but it appaers with all the work needed its gonna take at least 4ton to a monkey to do ... and thats just the F&F.
Maybe I could ask rod miles if he could do one for me ... and then get it chromed on this side.

actually the more I look at this bike, the more I see small problems.
the seatstays need to be fully removed and redone .......
the dropouts are different.
the coaster tab needs to be moved.

in fact it appears it would be better to take a street scene and modify that as the seat tube is already round on that.

I just wonder if the street scene was hi-ten / trimolly
