Garage sale Ripper.....

I have been working in the US for a couple of weeks and I found a Ripper frame with forks (landing gear copies) in a garage sale for $200 (about £98). Sadly it’s not a looptail, I think its 93 PKR XL, (after reading a post on BMXMUSEUM.com as it’s got a 21” top tube and there are brake cable guides on both the top tube and down tube)

It’s currently in transit back to the UK, because I posted it myself, but I wonder if anybody could help me in the meantime….

1)   Was this a good price?
2)   If it is a 93 PKR-XL will all my spare old school stuff fit on it? SR Stem, MX1000’s ,TAKAGI TOURNEY CRANK, ODYSSEY LAYBACK seat post…or is it all different?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but I never really looked at Rippers until I saw this one for sale and all I was looking for initially was cracks, dents, and dings etc…

It finally turned up yesterday!!  I was getting nervous....

Anyway, is it a 93 PKR-XL, was it worth £98, and will my old school spares fit it...(what do people think about the new 07 looptail limited addition (restore this or buy a new looptail?)

Not sure if you can use MX1000's on the brake bridge , looks semi set up for V brakes .

If it's 1" 1/8 ( no thread ) headset then your SR stem won't work .

Nice frame though and deffo worth building as NS thrasher

Nice frame ... I've got the earlier version which accepts all old school parts 

Your old school parts will fit your Ripper though you'll have to get 1" threaded forks to use your SR stem. Use a straight post too ... the TT is a nice length without the need for a layback



You could remove those v-brake lugs to make way for an old school caliper ... the bridge will take an MX1000. It should be an easy job in the right hands but I'd be inclined to leave it as it is and build it with the right parts with an old school flavour

I think these are set up for both V brakes and pitbull (at the bottom) and possibly a normal side pull, nice to have the choices

It's quite a rare bird being as it has both brake variants. I'd put it at 94-97 myself though

I used the MX 1000 on my alloy quad and that fitted great , had a battle with the headtube as it takes 1" 1/8 threadless forks, but managed to shim it up and fit some 1" alloy forks in the end .. Bike feels a mile long after riding the Gen 1 and GT , but love it, and one bike i will never part with ..

after 96 they went to "oversized" or 1.1/8" headtubes

means the lg's will be cheaper

The only reason I thought it could be 93, rather than a later model, was this post on a US forum regarding identifing Rippers (and it has both upper and lower brake cable guides?:

'79-'84 = Loop tail
'85 on  = built in seat clamp, non loop tail
mid '85 = straight chain stays (only one year before the change)
'86 on  = curved chain stays
'90-'93 = lower Pitbull brake mount
'93 only = upper and lower brake cable guides
'94 on  = canti or v brake mounts
'95 on  = 1 1/8 threadless stem/headset
'98 on  = 'SE' downtube decal instead of 'PK Ripper'
'99      = last year for US made products before sale to Fuji

Does anyone agree with the above?........
