V brakes on an old haro master??

Ive just bought a master,its fitted at the moment with some dia compes which feel crap :tickedoff:also the cable is on the right hand side on the front caliper so the bars wont spin,what I want to know is,would it be possible to fit some new style V style brakes to it,I want to use the bike,but not with crappy brakes,any help greatly appreciated

I'd go for U brakes, so you need to get a U brake plate, something like this:-
