I dont know much about performers but Pete must be rubbing off on me.

I thought the 84 has the outer standing platform tubes in the middle of the main top tube. It was the later ones that were slightly higher so they were all level at the top.

Also, Id say it was much later with that cable guide on the BB unless it was fitted later

It's not 4130 either so does that make it a late Jap model?

Cheers guys, thanks for the responses. Glad i didn't spend a whole lot of cash on it. or did i? (95 euros)

Anyway, it's bought now, and heading for a white powdercoating in the next few weeks.

Yeah it's well heavy and the dropouts are kinda beefy for the age.

I presume the extra tick on the gt logo on the sloped end of the top tube means something?

It's still got the cable guide on the bb steve, just kinda difficult to see from the angle of the pic. it's also got the guides on the underside of the downtube and i got a centre pull brake here waiting to go on.

Anyway, cheers for the input, better get cracking!

Yep, definately an 87.

That was the year they went to the double bend downtube...but they also updated the 'classic' Performer and sold it alongside the new design. The main update was the inclusion of those cable guides on the underside of the downtube...much better braking!

Anyhow, here's the relevant bit from the catalogue (with an early 'fudged' frame - they later went to solid dropouts):
