URGENT HELP!
« on: May 22, 2007, 08:41 PM »
I'm just fitting the headset to my Streetbeat, which is my first build from absolute scratch, I'm petrified of fooking it up.

I've bashed in both headset cups and now wanna fit the other bit (dunno whats its called) to the top of the forks, is there an easy way of doing it? will it just slot over as I tighten it up? or is it another hammer job?

need to know asap, its sat in the garden waiting to be done

The bottom race should be a tight push fit, if not then drop it in boiling water for a minute, then quickly fit, should expand it enough to fit :daumenhoch:

A bit of pipe with a slightly larger bore than that of the fork steerer - try an old hoover pipe (but I think that worked on my new school forks for inch an eighth)?

Get a piece of copper pipe (15mm plumbing stuff), push the ring on tap it down using a hammer and the pipe. The copper is so soft it won't damage the ring, failing that light taps with the hammer will work but take real care cos that's the race for the bearings!!!

If youve got a big bench vice, open the jaws up so they are just wider than the steerer tube. Then get the bottom bearing race started so it kinda holds in place. Hold the forks upside down with one fork leg in each hand. Hold the forks with the upside down steerer tube hovering inside the vice jaws. Then SMASH the forks down into the vice, so the bearing race hits the top of the jaws. Repeat till the race is all the way down, rotating your angle of attack such that the race sits flat.

This method tends to scratch the outside of the steerer tube, often marks the bearing race surface, and sometimes leads to a cracked bearing race which means you gotta buy a whole new headset.

OK, dont do it this way, but it is the way I fitted the last one I had to do (sorry to my 24" pitchforks!)  :crazy2:
