Your favourite all rounder 80's riders
« on: May 19, 2007, 12:46 AM »
Going on the back of everyone's favourite 80's US rider, I thought I'd start a new one.

Back in the early / mid eighties, there were only two disciplines in freestyle.  flatland and ramps.  back then most people rode both especially those on the competition circuit before you could choose to only enter one.

my question is, who do you think were the best all rounders from back then...

the first great all rounder has got to be Ron Wilkerson.  I was blown away by both his flatland and his ramp work.
probably the greatest all rounder of them all has to be Dennis McCoy.

In this country the two that spring to mind are Carlo Griggs and Mark Atkins.

Although Ollie Matthews was amazing on flat, then disappeared for a while and came back an awesome ramp rider.

but my top four have to be Wilkerson, McCoy, Griggs & Atkins.  :4_17_5:

Mark Atkins doesn't get too much press on here, but he's a guy who in the late 80's / early 90's was pulling 540's and tailwhip airs plus many superb lip tricks as well as awesome flatland tricks like hitch hikers and no handed hang 5's.

That's even harder to choose from than my 80's US rider post.....very difficult!

I think DMC takes some beating as a great all rounder so here goes.

1 DMC
2 Ron Wilkerson
3 Neil Ruffell
4 .......I'm stuck!

Mark Atkins and his dad (was it Roger?) came to Pagham and KOC about 5 years ago.  They seemed quite disillusioned with the direction of BMX (and whatever Scott Timmins wrote in Dig).  Nice lad though.

Rick Moliterno for me, sponsored by Hutch and Haro in the 80's as well as winning flat and freestyle comps, he raced AA pro (once beating Darryl Young on a JMC DY!) He was one of the early pioneers of street riding and the number one pioneer of technical mini ramp riding!

....oh, and he's responsible for the way BMX bikes are built today by starting the Standard Byke Company and showing everyone how bikes should be built!

I wager no-one has accomplished more in BMX than Moliterno.  :)

The late Pepi Winder was also a great all round rider. R.I.P.

Wasnt Mark Atkins the first rider in the UK to pull tailwhip airs?

I can't remember if Carlo was doing them as well at the time.

I believe Carlo was the first person who had pulled a tailwhip air and a 900 (not at the same time).

Oooh, tricky one this Trev but I think if we're going for an all rounder it's got to be DMC.

Wilkerson was awesome, Neil Ruffell was unreal on ramps and parks and very good flatland rider too but I think DMC had the edge for all round ability.

mark atkins was rad as hell, but the afore mentioned scott timmins made a big mark at the end of the 80's/beginning of 90's, as did andy burke who was the first rider to win the koc twice.

Have to agree with the dmc opinion because there's no doubting that the man was awesome in both disciplines,  but its all down to eras i suppose. 83 - 84 you would have to say fiola. 85-86 poss wilkerson after that dmc and so forth and so forth but about that time you could ride your specialist subject instead.........

......................It was good in the end (87 onwards in the uk) that finally you didn't have to ride both disciplines. I remember crazy eric steel destroying the opposition on the ramps but still coming last cos he could only muster up a skid as his flatland routine! lol

I remember the day Crazy Eric learnt how to do framewhips.... It was so funny.... Everyone carried on as if he'd invented the most difficult trick ever....
