Schofield Cycles, Westcliff!
« on: April 26, 2007, 01:47 PM »
Does anybody remember it? On the A127 near the Bell pub, Run by Gary and Craig Schofield. I bought my first set of Tuffs and various other bits from them, and spent a lot of time just hangin out in there after school till closing time, as i only lived 5min riding time away. :daumenhoch:
Was gutted when they closed, Rad City was miles away from me!
The Skyway and Haro teams demo'd there i think? Im sure a certain Mr Stupple will be able to confirm this....or not!

Does anybody know what the Schofield bros are doing now? Nice fellas

Sean.

I remember Schofield's shop,

I was a bit a RAD CITY boy myself,

I am sure Billy demo'd there on more than one occassion, let see if he can tell us ???

My brother used to work in Grip Bikes in rayleigh and I think Craig used to go in their quite alot, he even asked my brother if he knew anyone who wanted to buy his old PK Ripper ? By the time I heard about it (my bro is not the quickest on the ball!!) he'd sold it.  From memoery I actually think Craig lives in our good town of Leigh on Sea ???

Schofield Cycles, yep I remember it. It's now a KFC and Cycles UK is a few doors up.

Never went in there though. I was more of a Rad City kind of guy.

I've been in Grips a few times. That shop seems ok but more of a MTB / motoX type shop.. I tried to flog them my old Airmaster about 10 years ago and they didn't want it !  :LolLolLolLol:

Anyone remember the name of the shop that was by the rayleigh weir roundabout, just off the slip road anyway (london bound). It looked like a converted house.

Yeah I think Chris Young and myself did a demo as the Skyliners on the opening day, in fact thats where this pic was taken :

Then we did another one with the Skyway Team on the European Tour in 83, if I remember rightly I was the only one there for a while so started the demo on my own untill Chris Young, Andy Patterson and Bob Medrano turned up, then they drove off with out me at the end  :(

Yep I think we did, but I`m sure it was when we were in Europe somewhere, Barry Scott-Web and Ken Coster were none too pleased  :LolLolLolLol:

I think that shop became a scooter shop later on?  A proper one as I recall. all Lambs and Vespas.

Grips at Rayleigh is still a cool little shop, it is more MTB and MX orientated but will get you anything you want BMX wise.  Ian Bannister works there, he sort of owned the Rayleigh Trails when they were in full swing, and a nicer bloke you will not meet.  Gave up riding BMX to concentrate on MX because  'BMX is far too dangerous'   Quote.

Yeah it was Andy Patterson who drove it, and I think the only one not to jump in the van was Dean Scott-Web, but I remember Barry being irate when we came back, it was like being caught being naughty on a school trip by the headmaster  :LolLolLolLol:

I remember that drop-in picture very well, strange how magazine pictures get engraved on your mind.

Funny what it says too: "....And he's still not wearing a helmet. It could be a short career."

Couldnt be more wrong, ay

At the time it was a big no-no to be riding without a crash helmet on, but that pic was taken whilst we were just warming up and for the demo all the pads and crash helmet were on, so they ignored all the pics with full protection on and published that one  >:(

That mag came out whilst we were on the British part of the European Tour and one of the first people to see it was Dean Ellison the Skyway president at the time who was with us on that part of the tour, he wasn`t none to pleased either  :LolLolLolLol:

you can kinda understand why, cos its always hard when kids get led to think its cool not to wear a helmet, but you can also see why BMX went its own way later in the 80s and the riders took more control. Like that thread else where when Peter Noble wrote a letter to BMX Actionbike complaining about riders not wearing helmets, and threatening to pull advertising, and saying he wouldnt let the people who work for BMXA enter in BMX beat.

Still, its an unfortunate fact that riding pics without pads do always look cooler, that pic was an Punk BMX classic.
