SHOWING YOUR BIKES???
« on: May 12, 2007, 04:04 PM »
I've not been to  a show yet where they have a show n shine. I was thinking of entering my quad and ripper at MK but I'm not sure what the standard should be ??? I don't want to turn up and totally imbarresse myself with inferior builds :-[ :-[
what are you judged on?
is it period correct parts?
is it quality of parts?
is it  how rare it is?
what is taken into account?

Nope , its not about bike snobbery , its about letting others see your pride and joy, Judging is so hard I have done it a few times and always looked at everything and considered the bike in context, yes era correct parts are desirable and nice paint or chrome ( unless its the survivor class of course) but its about a feeling and a look that catches the judges eye, Phills Mongoose for me summed up 06 MK  , it was a standard goose ,but boy was it done well , purely stock and nothing amazing part wise but it was and is a fantastic bike

last year some guy on a pistol pete won something , and i dont even think he entered in any serious way

bring your bikes for us to see , dont think that we allow bike snobbery or we look down on builds that are not costing 10 million pounds ( little finger in mouth) every bike is great whatever it is and deserves to be shown. yes the big boys are going to walk away with some places as they build some sweet bikes, but everyone gets considered and you never know what the judges are going to do to keep it fresh

the cost of entry all goes on prizes and runnimg the event so you should feel happy in the knowledge that to support MK07 the only way is to enter your rides or yourselves in the racing as we do not charge for entry or camping and its all fun and a good chance to see the bikes in one place

so enjoy , support the event and enter them bikes into the show whether you think that you will walk away with first place or not

i think we all saw the downside of too much restriction and compulsories in bmx.   that was the downfall of the ukbfa.   i would have no problem bringing a iron horse to mk07. Not that i was at mk06, but i guess its all about getting a few guys together having a chinwag, sharing some beers, smoking a few doobies (optional), doing a bit of camping and letting your hair down. long live uk bmx...

Yep as harris said make an effort , clean them up but do not be put off cos others have some impossible to attain bike they got years ago for thrupence, its all fun and the moment someone starts getting very serious over placings at the show and shines is the day i enter a emelle supra scrambler motoX silverstar 20 max

so keep it real and keep it fun , its nice to win but nicer for everyone else to see 100s of different bikes in one place

Rich in training for 1st place lol

who gives a fook what your bikes look like.....apart from you.

its your build, you built it how you wanted it, so just bring what ya got and let everyone see your little piece of bmx history.
i must admit some people get a little anal over era correct parts, but listen....its a show and shine, ok, now that means you give your bike a polish and let everyone see it, its not about ''oh he has 401's but he should be running a profile box crank, or is that a set of tech 4, they should be tech 3's.

dont sweat it mate, bring your rides for everyone to look at.

Dave

so long as my tenner for showing my bikes goes to the site and the running of the event thats all that matters.
if you get a little something at the end its the best feeling ever.
but if not. think you've put a bit back into making hopfully a great meeting  :daumenhoch:.

Like Rich says it's a real difficult one this. I've organised a couple of show n shines now, and it gets tougher and tougher and you get loads of abuse because different people would choose different bikes. But, that's why I'll always choose fellow judges that have different opinions to what I like and different areas of expertise/knowledge.

For me it's all about 'feel' - i.e. does it look like a bike we would have ridden BITD? It's not all about aerospeeds and flight cranks. I rode throughout the 80's and only 1 person I knew ever had a flight crank...we all rode 1 pc. So, I won't necessarily judge on that...but fellow judges would...so a balance is struck.

It's also about (as others have mentioned) the effort that has gone in to source and find the parts, or the effort on a resto, the attention to detail, etc. So, I always talk to the owners to establish the story behind them - good examples of this were Fuzzynods Condor and Sawsalls Mongoose...great stories behind them and just look perfect. It's not all about how much money you chuck at a bike, however that doesn't count a money bike out!

However, if there are 2 identical bikes and one has the era-correct brake blocks and the other doesn't, then the 'perfect' one is gonna win.

For any show n shine, it's best to talk to the organiser and ask them what the criteria are. They should normally publish the criteria up front, but if they don't, just ask.

We'll be posting details of the MK Show n Shine soon, complete with criteria, so keep your eyes peeled to the Events section.

Again, as others have said, BUILD FOR YOU!!!! If you're happy, who gives a flying fook what others think?!

Good lad Dave, MK07 is costing a small fortune, and we need everyone's help.
