I remember seeing a still sequence in BMX Plus or BMXA of a guy doing a flip, that was before 83, possibly 82, anyone else remember the pics?

Yip.  Jose Janez  (sp).  Deffo doing them early on, I packed up in 84 and I remember them distinctly.  He used a nearly vert transitioned take off to flatbank landing. Kinda looked like a fcuked up spine ramp.

He came from a circus background I believe, and it wasn't a new trick to them.  :)

For me, true BMX flips began with Hoffmans vert flip in France  (the one on the cover of Headfirst I believe).  Completely different to anything else and a true triumph of balls over brains.  No disrespect intended.....  :4_17_5:

Wow.....

I remember those pictures well..... Made a deep impression on me, it was when my interest in BMX was beginning to fade, but I still used to read BMX Plus in Smiths from time to time..... seeing that made me realise things were moving way past where I would be prepared to go..... So, along with getting tired with girls laughing at me riding a kids bike, and the fact BMX was dying a little at the time (I blame pastel/primary coloured bikes for both) it was a major reason I didn't ride a BMX for another 10 years, by which time I couldn't give a shit if I was able to do the latest tricks, or got the piss taken out of me.....

My memory is really going though, as if I imagine it now, I see Mat Hoffman..... I kinda assumed it must have been him.... but it did seem strange that it took a good few years more before he became a household name.....
