Mons coverage #5 The Final Mons BMX “Jam”
« on: April 17, 2007, 12:54 PM »
This was the final BMX contest at Mons farm. It was late 1991 and BMX was small. So small that RAD (formally BMX Action Bike) lumped the Southsea KOC and Mons Jam into the same report (it was a skate mag by then). Invert Magazine (that went on to be Ride) also covered it.

The contest wasn’t a big event but looking at the riders who were there, you can see that pretty much everyone went to every comp back then. From Ian Morris (then riding in C group!) to Jamie Bestwick (riding A). The ramp was strange cos it has a 9ft Vert ramp spined with a 7ft midi. Almost all the C group rode the 7ft, all the A group rode the 9ft, and the B group were split down the middle. Not many people crossed the spine. Craig Campbell, who didn’t enter, crossed it, and tried to nosepick over it!

Also, This was my first riding shot in a magazine! I came second behind a great rider … and that’s the Truth!

that was some summer!!

here's me fliming on the vert ramp at KOC, i'll get round to putting the footage up soon. Also check out 3rd place C group mini!!

and on the platform at mons, I have a cool section of this jam too. Soon, soon... (sorry alex)

when craig campbell turned up I couldn't believe it, he looked like a total raver on a chrome GT aggressor. Then he started to ride, how smooth!! he did a big 540 up and down on a totally straight line (no carving) and even tried to nosepick the vert spine, I can't remember if he pulled it or not. Anyway I was stoked beyond belief, he is still one of my favourite riders of all time and for good reason.

it's cool if you read all the results from the KOC.. you know every single one of those names..
as steff evans said "in 1987 i knew every bmxer in the country!!"
(he was asked to leave the party shortly afterwards, maybe because he took a dump in the bath)

Quality pics Alex, they look like they were good times for the few of you that carried on riding in the dark days  :daumenhoch:
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Was that the year he smashed his mouth, got stitched together again, then came back to the park to smash his mouth all over again?
By the way, somewhere I've a pic of Grant at a KoC. Must rustle it up, it's a winner.

EDIT:
Found it!

Looks like you sat down on Grant's right shoulder.

I'm pretty sure it's me on his left shoulder with the Evolution 'ingnorace, fear, superstition' t-shirt....still got that one at home.

The skyway team went there on one of the early curb dog visits so maurice may well have been with them. I think there was a picture of Eddie Roman and Hugo riding Mons ramp in a magazine. It may have been the same time that Campbell was there?

I'll ask Sunil. I think he was there that day.

Hey yeah, i was there the US skyway team turned up. There was Eddie Roman, Ron Peterson, Hugo Gonzales and Scotty Freeman, not sure who else was there, maybe some of the UK people turned up like Damon and Tony Mack, cant remember cos I was too busy doing Petersons with Peterson in the barn. Hugo Gonz was hooking up from 7ft airs and riding out of it everytime, like a 7ft disaster.
