My rear wheel is driving me insane, it is making a very rhythmic clicking sound, a bit like the one the old budgie bikes used to make.

I think it is the freewheel as I have tightened up all loose spokes, but I can't be sure. Tried another wheel on the bike and the sound has gone so it is deffo the back wheel.

It has an ACS claw freewheel on it and i am having trouble getting the b'stard off. My suntour freewheel remover is a tad too big to get any proper resistance.

So, where do you think the noise is coming from and if it is the freewheel, how the feck do i get it off. I have thwacked it with all my heart.  :knuppel2:

could be the axle  even if theres no play  they can click.also chain alignment can click  if wonky
freewheel can be damaged if your bringing it weekend we can bash it of and change.

i used a huge cold chisel and hammer to remove my freewheels
or take it into a shop and let them do it

Doubt it's the freewheel, strip the axle out and check the bearings, you'll probably find you've got a damaged one in there.  Also check the axle cone for uneven wear as this could indicate a bent axle also causing a clicking sound as the cone rotates around the bearings unevenly creating a pressure point that "clicks" when passed (when the pressure is released).

Dan, I will be bringing it along, thanks for the offer mate and fingers crossed.

Rhys, took it to a shop and they had the same freewheel remover as me, and couldn't get it off either.

Marty, the bearings are sealed. I have had the axle off and checked it and it all seems fine.

I need to get the freewheel off to change it and work out what it is from a process of elimination. It is not the chain as I tried a different rear wheel and it was fine.

oil your freewheel

you never know , it might be a bit of grit or something, flush it out with oil and see what happens

Rich, tried to get the cover off the freewheel last night, but that wont even budge.  :knuppel2:

It doesn't sound like grit, it is too clunky rather than grindy(?), it is also far too rhythmic and only really happens when I put some power down too.

Check the teeth on the freewheel to see if one or more is out of line or if the sprocket has too much movement on the freewheel body, a long process of elimination  :-\

Jim , Check the sealed bearings mate. I have a clicking one on the drive side of my suntour . I think a couple of bearings have flat spotted,i popped the black cover off with a needle and gave them a blast with WD to clear the old grease and a few slap heads fell out (you know , looks like the top of a bald mans head fell off  :2funny: ) so even though they are sealed they can still get fooked  :tickedoff:.

I'll check mate. Sounds very plausible. Can you buy sealed bearing races?

Yep, from a bearing shop, there should be a number on the seal if not take the bearing with you to get a match  :daumenhoch:

I had the same fault on my GT new school the other week, only noisy when pedalling not when coasting. Had same problem removing freewheel tried chiesel and punch. ended up using a air grinder at work with a cutting disc, cut through outer shell enough to get it off, then used big grips to remove the inner shell.Lots of sparks and worries about spokes but only scratched one. fitted new freewheel noise gone and also now running 39-14 gearing so had to remove link from chain.

i have never failed to get any freewheel off, by gripping it in a vice, till it stopps turning, then using the wheel for leverage.

fooks the freewheel, but not the hub.
I want to touch ORB

Is it a sealed suntour hub?  There is someone on the burner forum who can get the replacement bearings for those.

Check out this thread, very useful:

Not so sure then, the guy who gets the suntour bearings might still be able to help you find what you need though.

Funnily enough I have this exact same problem on my aero pro rear wheel :(

Jim , If its the bearings and you are struggling to find replacements , give me the bearing numbers and i will nip here
http://www.abexpower.co.uk/

I go here for my bearings when i replace them in the motorbikes and quad and they are pretty cheap  :daumenhoch:
