for me, i am a restorer

that's the fun in it imo. to take something battered and used and make it shine again!

to relace the wheels, clean the spokes and hubs.

to regrease.

to get nitromors on your hands.

to fume out the neighbours with rattle can mist.

i see all these super expensive "NOS" parts on the bay - where's the fun? clean the old stuff and repaint it!!

get your hands dirty. reuse your stuff. drive the crazy NOS prices back down.

Restore where possible, or if all else fails or you fook it up then replace!

I think you need two categories:

Restoration: The replacement or repair of worn/damaged parts to bring the item back up to working/show condition

Conservation: The minimal amount of work required, saving all useable parts and only cleaning/performing minimal maintenance

restoration isn't replacement

and stripping / cleaning is usually more work than clicking on the bay

restore, theres something special about a part that you have spent time and labour on especially when it was realy awful,

f-cked up the removal of annodized bit, left in bag for 3 hours

Always better doing a build with alot of resto involved

but I definately wouldn't say its cheaper than buying NOS

i.e. rechroming $:-\$

About 50/50 resto/NOS builds , it depends on availability of desired item $:-\$

where applicable, restore. new parts rock, but a resto gives pride. NOS isn't what it was anymore.

For me it's restore parts that aren't available anymore and replace parts that you can still buy if cheap enough. I never throw anything away though no matter how worn and battered they are - my garage is full of old rusty cranks, brakes, wheels, frames that I will hopefully get round to restoring one day

restore or replace? who cares as long as the out come suits the owner. i don't fall for the "mines better cause i restored it" chest beating wank. some people have abilties and equipment, others don't

however i did vote for restore, as i do get a small sense of satisfaction bringing somthing back to life, but im with gt073 when he says who cares as long as it turns out how the owner wants

I'm not blessed with huge amounts of cash so restoring things is the only way to do things for me.

Saying that though it would be nice to go out and buy all new bits and assemble the bike of your dreams, all those nice shiny parts in unopened boxes and bags.

Tyres
...

not sure about the chest beating mine's better than yours stuff
a restored part doesn't always look as good as new

i like the cleaning up part of building a bike

also once i have built a bike that i have toiled over i am not in a hurry to get it immediately on ebay, as i see happening with some nos parts builds

i have tons of nos parts

but i love to restore stuff, as dave says, a sense of achievment and/or pride when done is more rewarding to me but it's not evrybody's cup of tea. I seem to be lacking the 'care about what other's think' gene, so period correct my ass, who gives a twonk's wonk. Make it how YOU like it, that's the golden rule in OS bmx.

What is 'shelf wear'? i have loads of stuff on shelves and none of it has dings or scratches from being there. NOS, nackered old shite
