heavy bikes, light bikes ,what is the answer

i am trying to put a light bike together  and so are alot of people,but just thinking about the best solution.
i aint a fatty  but my body weight today is 13st   i have put on my bikes weight since 1986  .
in the mid to later 90s  i rearly never once remember a time where i wanted to save weight and my bike did most
things i wanted with no probs
so could a diet you fat fookers be part of the answer.

but riding the condor, compared with the pashley, there is a noticable difference, even for me, and im rubbish.

so....diet is part of the answer, but not all of it, by a long chalk.

im off now to drill out the excess rubber in the soles of my vans.

go for a run  it will save you £50  on a ti axle
go for a swim  it will save you £80 on a mag hub   
and so on  then your light bike will get lighter cheaper and youll be more rad.

you are right of course.

trying to ride regularly is my form of excercise. And to keep my interest and enthusiasm up, a lighter bike helps. I tried 180'ing out of the jump box and i can do it (sort of) on dordys s&m, izaaks ripper, and phils standard 125, and my pashley.all nice light bikes. i cant do it or even come close on my condor-about 40lbs, haro sport-35lbs, or izaaks gt performer-34lbs.

the pash is coming in at about 28lbs, and i havnt weighed it since getting slamxlt's, redneck xlt, khe mac 2's, but i bet that has lost at least another 2 lbs.

so thats like the difference of riding with 6 bags of sugar in your pockets.......

i prefere my ripper its so light about 25lb but my 6pack is so heavy  but im slowly making it lighter  doesnt help that i weigh 16 stone

Hmmm, if you gave a 40lbs bike to Jerry, he still air it 10 ft out the half pipe...i think if you're born rad, it makes little difference. But a lighter bike would still be prefered given the choice.

But, if you're shite with a weak back like me, every gram counts as a lighter bike certainly makes it easier to manouver. Mind you, mine is 26.5lbs and might as well be 50lbs, cause I'm still not allowed to ride the fecker!

a bike can be too light though

an old school TA with alloys is so light that it lacks "feel"
a lightweight wheelset is the best place to start with

a friend of mine once bought a mirra 540 pro. it was so heavy, that it hurt to bunnyhop up a curb.
that was in 2001. i still have some parts off it. the pedals alone weigh more than my current ride

i dont dispute a lighter bike is much much much much better easier to do anthing with.
as it is fact .
it would make things easier for us belly boys to loose a few pound of our bellies.
as i said few years ago i never ever thought about what weighed what just rode what ever i had.

your right dan. and with regular riding, due to the progression you make on your light bike, your belly should begin to recede.

thats what im hoping anyway.

I can't ride heavy BMXs for shite, I've ridden race bikes all my life. I did once have a Mcneil Ruben and I built it as light as I could, it rode nice, I should never have sold it.

I like the fact alot of companys are brining out light parts now, I much prefer the look of 'freestlye' parts than race most of the time anyway. I can mix it up on my race bike now so I dont look too disco down tbhe park or trails. Ti costs loads too and does become a sort of adiction.

I rode my Dialled race bike around some Nottingham street spots and the local skatepark last night withn Andy and am slowly coming around to using it for a bit of  everything, it doesnt weigh a lot and has no Ti on it as yet

as far as i know weight is a reaction issue in freestyle and flatland, how fast your bike does what its told and how fast you can react to what the bike does once your in the trick,

i have heard it said " if your reactions are slow then you may find a heavier bike easier to handle as the weight slows it down "

s&m slam xlt.......about 400g lighter than normal slams

redneck xlt stem....360g

wellgo magnesium pedal with ti spindle, 150g each

macneil seat and post comb. allegedly the lightest on the market.

ive seen 36 spoke front wheels/sealed 10mm axle, on cyclesport coming in at 890g. my hula hoop front wheel with primo son of a bommb hub 10mm is 1380g

primo hollowbites, very light, but so are profiles.

premium products ti spindle, fits profiles, at about two thirds  the weight and cost.
