Nintendo.

All the kids who rode BMX got too old to ride them...  :LolLolLolLol:

The next generation wanted to play computer games as Nintendo marketed their games consoles better than bike companies marketed their bmx's.

On "Joe Kid", Bob Osborne mentions some crazy statistics regarding the sales of nintendo consoles versus bmx's.

Can't remember the figures, but I do remember it was kinda shocking.

I think it was mainly the Gameboys that swayed them.  It was a different class to Donkey Kong and Snoopy Tennis and that Popeye game in the boat...

It never stopped me riding my bike, so did it really kill bmx, im not so sure. I thought that as soon as mountain bikes came out that was it, one kid got one then everyone had to have one :'( :'( :'(

there was probably many factors, but i think the main one was the marketing of bmx.  a lot of smaller manufacturers got swallowed up by the huge multi-nationals in the name of marketing. no-one wanted to be seen on a bmx you could buy from kmart no matter how good their pro rider was.

oh, and also, every generation after mine are just a bunch of lounge room lazy bastards  :LolLolLolLol:

I thought it died when mountain bikes came out... i never liked /wanted or owned a mtb and didn't get my first bmx which i'd always wanted untill mtbs had just come out!!  But in a way the mtb craze eventually died out and bmxs once again became the cool bike to own ...i also notice nowadays even "old" guys n gals can get away with riding them in the streets and no one bats an eye lid or thinks "your a bit old to be riding that" lol

I dont think skateboards had anything to do with it either as they've always been around , plus me and my friends had them aswell as bmx's anyway.

for me,  around 84 my manager and owner wanted me to turn pro racing,

i just couldn't see it,  how could i earn a living riding a bike that i rode

every week :crazy2:

anyway got a job working on cars and used to just ride my bike and practice my tricks in

break time then one day  i  felt emberrased to ride a bike,

thought everyone was looking at me  for the wrong reasons so

that was it,    bmx,   game over :'( >:(

I quit bmx for breakdancing in 85, and this was the same for most of the kids around my way. I tried to do both for a while, but in the end breakdancing took over. I'm not saying breakdancing killed bmx, but it certainly didn't help.

Mcdonalds and nintendo and nonces!

Mcdonalds, when i was a kid mcdonalds was a treat now kids have em every day, just look at all the fet kids about do you think they really want to go out on a bike?

Nintendo, why go out when you can do all the things you would have done sat in front of a tv!,we made camps played soldiers, made bows an arrows, and rode bmx all day long!

Nonces, because of them people are to scared to let there kids stay out late or go to the park on there own,or even ride to other parts of town to meet there mates!

Its a whole new world to when we were kids, full of fast foods and disposable lifestyles an i for one think thats really quite sad.

The same can be asked of skateboarding, and BMX like skateboarding certainly went through a dark and lonely period but it didn't die, more like a diet and it lost some fat.  Someone mentioned about the big brands and I think that has a lot to do with it, when the mainstream and huge corporates move in the budgets get consolidated and the little guys can't compete.  When the interest wanes the big guys move out and the little guys come back in which is what happened to BMX.

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.

We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.

We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law suits.

We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.

We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.

We walked to friends' homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...They actually sided with the law.

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and
responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them. Congratulations!

Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good. For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us.

This my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a smile on your face: The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986........They are called youth.

They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel.

They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda Carlisle.

For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam.

AIDS has existed since they were born. CD's have existed since they were born. Michael Jackson has always been white.

To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.

They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission Impossible are films from last year. They can never imagine life before computers.

They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, Red Hand Gang or the Famous Five.

They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You. They can't believe a black and white television ever existed. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone

It was like that around here...the same lad who was the first to get a BMX, (red burner)....then a Supergoose....then a Haro FST I think (the white frame)...was the first to get a mountain bike as soon as one appeared in the shop...but he was quite spoilt and just got what he wanted when he wanted.  BMX lasted a bit longer for me becuase I was heavily into the racing and that stopped mostly I think cos my dad got ill and couldn't take me to all the meetings anymore...but by then everyone was riding moutnain bikes around here...cept me....I went on to get a racer cos I'd always wanted one.  :)
