What approx year did they come out?? I just got a pair for my new build. Cool. I can remember them but everyone i speak to about BMX dosen't!! It is obviously mags and Araya's they remember. Against the Arayas were they like the Porsche Boxter, the cheap mans 911?? (Sorry if ya got one!)

Not 100% on years but Alex's speedlines (82/83 onwards ?) are later than the 7C box type Ukais . The 7C type ones could be 79-81 ? .

So they were around bitd then. I wonder why they are not very well known or even remembered by the majority?

That sounds about right Matt.

Munners I wouldn't say they were the equivalent of the boxster, just an alternative, but good enough for a number of manufacturers to spec as oem including Redline!!

Check the link for the Carrera II

I thought everyone knew them. Maybe they were more of a race thing, and not so much a freestyle wheel?

There were UKAI adds in almost every mag bitd.

You should check the prices between a set of Ukais (approx £125) to a set of Arayas (approx £80).

The speedlines seem to be a much more sought after wheelset. I remember them back in the day but not as much as Arayas, as most people round my way had arayas or tuffs.
I only ever really saw them if I went to Rom.

I reckon ya just cracked it mate. I'm from London/Surrey and maybe they were just a bit scarse down these parts? It was Arayas and tuffs here too. I used to buy the bmx mags though and i still cant really remember them in them. Wierd. May have been a northern ting!

It was mostly about tuffs round our way, but Arayas as well and I certainly remember Ukai's and Weinmann as rim manufacturers (not forgetting other mag makers like Aero and Acorn)

strange not remembering UKAI's from BITD, a lot of my mates had em, must say they weren't as popular or common as Araya's....., i'd also say they were as good as them, probably more scarce, so more desirable for that fact possibly.

Personally I rode with most wheels, but had a preference for Skyways or Z's !!

Ukai's were very well know bitd, I always used Ukai's on my race bikes, starting with 1 3/8" when I was a young un.

the majority of people only rode a raleigh burner for a year, then fooked bmx off.
that's why they only remember plastic wheels, and have an image of bmx being a "kid's bike"

It was either Tuffs or spokes round my way.

If you went down the spokes route then you had the choice of either Ukai or Araya.

I was an Araya man through and through.  ;)

same wheels

arayas or ukais , same difference

ukais appeared on a few stock bikes so they are more desirable to people who are trying to  recreate the stock bikes

Ukais were a bit cheaper i think bitd , so they got second place to araya as a brand

I bet they were made in the same place

Perfect wheel for me would be pro class rims with bullseye hubs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

i had a few sets of sumo alloys bitd
aswell as spencer rims

tbh we weren't all that "brand name concsious" the main thing was the rim worked and axle wasn't fooked.

I knew someone that had Mavic rims on his TA. That was pretty radical at the time - a TA without tuffs and a brand I'd never heard of.... ???

I always had Araya BITD and never really considered having Ukais but since I started putting OS rides together I have built both NOS Araya 7X and Ukai's, the upshot of this is I completely changed my opinion of UKai's as the manufacturing quality is better than Araya and they build much easier (Pro Class are poor quality compared to Araya or Ukai)
Why oh why do I still buy kids bikes!

i used to ride zeds n tuffs mainly but i did have a few sets of arayas BITD (81-83) and i remember ukais well but never went for them, as ukais, around these parts, were known for being lighter than arayas so obviously they were not as strong, used to love ukai the rim decals tho.

Now im a big boy, i know this was bollox, but tho i still have a soft spot for arayas, i do appreciate that ukais are the superior rim
