Shimano DX. Old to New.
« on: October 15, 2005, 04:06 PM »
OK, so I got some gold DX's off the bay the other day and they were a bit tired and lets face it, gold is gay ;)

So,

I thought I would do the usual clean up of em.

Pics were taken just incase you had not done it before and you wanted to see how easy it is.

Start. Take DX's and wipe off all the muck with a damp slag.

Leaves you with this. some pedals.

Get the nitro goo on a brush and start to dab it on the gold working it into the gaps and holes.

Starts to look like this.

Dab a bit more on to make sure you have covered all the gold (or what ever colour your removing) and leave it and go smoke a tab.

Come back with pot of hot water with Fairy in, A scrubbing brush is cool, but I have Abbys leccy tooth brush while she is at work and this is the best as it gets into all the hard to reach places with that plaque removing action.

Give em a rinse and there you go.

If your a big girly bling fan then get one of them Billo soap filled wire wool pads and give em a rub over with hot water to make em all gay and shiney.

Done.

Oh, if You have SX and not DX you need Caustic soda as the nitro is not as clever at taking that off.

Remember, Garden science is well cool, but with Nitro Mors, USE GOGGLES/GLASSES, i have had it in my eye before and it is NO FUN.

Nice job.  I've used caustic soda on DX before with good results.  DO NOT leave them in too long - they will dissolve....... :o

Those pedals don't look like they've had much use Orb,  what did you pay for them?

here are the ones wirewheel gave me .These pedals have some serious history and have had some serious abuse so i am happy to give them a  bit of TLC in their retirement.I sanded/filed all of the mould lines off them , think it makes them look a bit cleaner.   Got quite bit to do on them  but thought that I would post a pic or two anyway. A question,  has anybody had any luck replacing the plastic dx cap with something else. I was thinking of  a badge or something . The plastic caps are a bit gnarled  so need replacing . I am guessing that you can't get originals anymore in Nos conditition.
cheers for the pedals Al , YOU are the man

I saw someone's on (I think) the VintageBMX site with some sort of endcap from Home Depot.
No idea if a UK equivalent exists in B&Q or Wickes.
