rare bike repaint . . . .
« on: October 12, 2005, 01:58 PM »
I have a green streetbeat frame.

its NOS. it's a gem

i don't like the green though, so I am gonna respray it.

would it best to: inspector mors the frame to bare metal ~ or ~ sand it up and use the green as a good base for the new paint to stick to?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh  never use hammerite...its my nemesis...

you always thinh it will be good cos its strong etc.....the amount of things ive messed up with hammerite or smoothrite is beyond counting.

then when the little bubbles in it for, or it wont stick to some miniscule dot of shit, you cant get the bastard off.

use acrilic or cellulose. celli is harder to spray, cos it blooms, but this can be polished when hard.

b an q plasticote is good if you want a simple colour

otherwise acrylic, double concentrate from car shops...not halfords.

Indeed.

I painted the bonnet of my last 205 with a tin from there and it was VERY good, but the laquer was not as good as original. But after a bit of work I got it all matched up...

a good tip for rattle cans is get them hot

put them in a boiled kettle of water (BOILED not boiling)
or on the radiator

or if you plan a paintjob the next day, stick em in the airing cupboard

you pikey.....no airing cupboard

get it powdered...its the best way to go if you are a bit of a numpty with spraying, i normally get pretty good results using cellulose paint. or missfits craig does a blinding job with the 2k stuff.
remember tho lots of fine coats not a few heavy layers, and cellulose can always be flatted off and polished if the finish isnt too clever....
you could use the original paint as a base but it may be prudent to seal it with a decent base coat sealer after youve keyed the green, however you still need to prime on top of the sealer anyway...but it beats using paint stripper hands down....am i waffleing now....stop

good luck and take your time

i can spray fine with a spray gun and 2k paint
my dad used to build powerboats, and we had a spray booth

sprayed many a car in there.

powercoating is too expensive for my streetbeat. plus i need more than one colour ;)
more than 2 even ;)

i dont really know what kind of paint is used on frames generally.

and i'm wondering what you lot'd do in my situation.

with cars its was easy - key the surface then whack the new colour on.

plus i wanted to take a shortcut by not morsing the frame.

wish i still had a spray booth to use.  >:(

dave your tips on spraying are vital for any spraying novice.

also one point of note is that spray can paint takes a full WEEK to harden properly.

painting with ease, sand down, primer, sand down smooth(wet & dry), paint(many thin coats,10 mins apart), sand down(wet & dry to a haze), laquer, finished ;D

Halfords mixed colours - ie. get them mix a colour for you - are a nice cellulose with decent cover & a nozzle which gives a nice arc. Worth 10 times the standard pre-mix range, yet less than twice the price.
