your first bmx and your first modification
« on: January 17, 2007, 03:45 AM »
what was the very first thing you changed on your very first bmx?

me, i took off the hard plastic pad set that said "bmx 2000" and fitted a brand new aero pad set.
oh yeh

swiftly followed by a grip change for mushrooms

not sure i can remember that far back....  i think they must have been new grips on my piranha.  i think they were called spirals or something like that. basically mushroom copies, but for some reason every pair i had were really soft and everyone thought they were real mushrooms apart from the fact they never had the logo on the ends. but what did the kids in my area know...

if i'm honest, the grips i first bought were spirals too. they were like mushrooms but harder. and only 1.99

i got some back in 1996 and was surprised at how lame they were - as bitd i run them a lot!!!

back in probably 1977 i had a "malvern star" dragster that i put motor bike handle bars on. because there was no bump in the middle big enough for the single clamp stem i built it up with sheet metal (probably an old beer can). as for grips i could only get motor bike grips so the r/hand one was built up with tape. life was incredibly simple then, but i didn't know it  :coolsmiley:

A BMX Magnum with drum brakes  ;D  My first modification was to snap the front forks trying to jump a ditch  :D
I swapped my Grandstand Astro Wars for that  >:(

Mushrooms on my ultra burner. I remember the excitement getting them on the school bus off a kid who had been to Rad City that weekend.

My Scorpion was changed before it left Alpine Sports when I bought it in 1979 or 1980 (can't remember for sure!), I got a Mongoose Gold Stem and Grab On Grips put on it straight away.  Next up was the brake lever I think although not 100% sure, changed the shimano one for a Haro two finger one  :daumenhoch:

My first BMX was a Raleigh Super Burner Mk1.

The first modification I made was to get rid of the fecker and get something decent!  ;D :daumenhoch:

I didn't change anything on my bike as Steve Wilson made it to order for me  ::).  I had yellow Z rims, blue tyres, yellow Elina seat, blue pads, erm can't remember anymore, that was back in 80/81.  My brother changed his red mags for spoked wheels because of the weight (on his Wilson) and it also had suspension forks, so our Dad changed them for him.

My 82 Silver Streak came with Oakley 3 grips,I switched them to F 1's (If I remember correctly) before it even left the shop. :daumenhoch:
Actually I got it in 84,it's an 82 though.
It was hiding in the back of the shop, found & built the day I got it,it was cheaper cuz it was already 2 yrs old. :smitten:

My goose came home with black ash bars and single stem, I got a gold stem of ruffell and a pair of red race inc bars (on a blue built bike), closely followed by a sugino one piece chain ring, then the tuffs went in favour of araya 7cs. then............

wow I could have bought a new bike....
