restoring dx pedals . . . ?
« on: January 17, 2007, 02:37 AM »
i got some old shimano dx pedals, and they are pretty good but the ends are a little gouged (around the end caps)

now i got some new end caps sorted, but how do i "polish out" the gouges?

just file them?

i intend to paint the pedals black.

i've thought about this for the ones i have and i think a really light paper on a belt sander may work, followed by a coarse buff wheel, then undercoated with an etch primer before paint. i also found when stripping mine that they are painted and not ano'd.
where did you get your caps from?

I use wet and dry of various grades on a sanding block (helps keep or restore the flat surfaces) and then polish, not an original finish (as this is slightly dimpled) but good enough for me.

There's a good link on vbmx from Ted Carl about polishing. From page 6 he is working on DX's.

http://www.vintagebmx.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=005471;p=6

Before anno the pins will need to be removed also.

Ted is a genius and is happy to shre his tips on the whole sanding/polishing process. It is a long read but well worth it for the education.

i did a pair which were 20+ years old and quite tatty,i just sanded out gauges with 120 production paper then used a brass wire wheel on a drill using very little pressure, this will recreate the dimples(casting marks) i havent painted them yet but glass paint is meant to work well :daumenhoch:
