Painting over chrome
« on: January 10, 2007, 11:21 PM »
Can it be done  ?

If possible what would be the general procedure ?? prep work ?? specific primer ? before using rattle cans...

My frame & forks have seen better days and are pretty pitted.

Advice please.

thanks
Owen

get a scotch pad to key the chrome. then it is the same as anything else. clean, prime, spray. i reccomend that you do a layer of clear on top to seal and for shine. hlps stop scratches taking colour off and looks far better.

Thanks townsend, as I'd suspected... will def lacquer too...

69er, I was wondering what kind of primer would be best for this surface.

I've heard people say that it's not the done thing to paint on chrome and others saying it would be fine... think I'll just go for it.

Get yourself some Acid Etch Primer.  It comes in an aerosol spray can (Halfords sell it) and it is specifically for priming metal surfaces, it ensures the paint will stick to the surface, it also prevents rust.

or just powdercoat it. etch primer is good tho, but not as strong as powder, an with that you just need to take off the flakey bits.

i wanted a set of chrome forks powdered but the fella i asked to do it said the powder dosn't go well on the chrome long term. so i thought i'll be putting them through the oxalic acid treatment, then etch primer and paint instead. if i screw it up i'll just start again. try it yourself othomas2 and you'll get heaps of self satisfaction plus confidence to do more.

if you want a real finish. 150 quid on a compressor and spray set. standox 2-pack and A GAS MASK(important is the gasmask, due to 2 pack paint being based on a poison) you can do candy and clear coats like a pro with a little practice.

oh i get it. sorry mate, this is unicode. you will need to use your carachter map to find out where they are, you can't type them i think. just trying to make the sloganizer a bit original, then it spilled over to my user name. was bored with the bmx bit.

carachter map is in c:/windows/system 32 then just look for it.

just go to run in your start menu and type charmap.exe and press ok.
