Im almost there with 3 mid builds (big thanks to Harris).

Most of it will be along way off NOS but anyone who rode in the 90s will know that how the bikes looked!!

If things go well they will be a Early Dirtbike, a Holmes and a HAF.

Claasics, one and all.    I heard that the HAFs were supposed to be Dirt Bike geometry, but my mates one and subsequently other owners I've spoken to all said they rode very oddly indeed.  Whats your take on that?   Dirt Bikes always rode so nicely...

Remember Richard Brown snapping his chrome Dirt Bike at KOC one year coming up short on a flip?

Richard Brown! The flying Postman. Thats a name I havent heard for a while. What a top man he was!

Ive never ridden a HAF before but it was said that they were the same geometry as a dirtbike (even tho that changed a few times). I bet the extra weight doesnt help the feel of the ride.

I'll let you know when mine is built. You can even have a go on the HAF and the (1991) Dirtbike back to back as they will all be very much riders!

I got one of the first HAF frame and forks when they came out, and i must say it was a nasty frame to ride.
I was never a great fan of dirtbikes, but they were beutiful to ride compared to HAF frames.

Funny that, isn't it?  but I heard it a lot.  Still, definately an icon.

As for Richard Brown,  we had a falling out and I wouldn't now cross the street to piss on him.  But thats a story for another time...

Rad as fook though, I used to love watching him ride.

During the late years of the HAF (arround 1998) I heard a japanese distirutor ordered 50 HAF frames but 2" shorter on the top tube.
I am guessing he wanted them for flatland.

Funny thing was after after they made the top tube shorter, it was not possible to spin the bars as the front wheel hit the cranks

While on the S&M thing i wonder how many original Mad Dog frames are still around?

Homeless used the same (Dirt Bike) frames for the original Mack frame as i recall they were also pretty cool.

Also, does anyone remember the 2B 'Tenth' frame?

IMO the HAF sucked ass by the way, the massive seat tube also made it an ugly bike to look at, the platform Dirt Bike was way nicer.

Didn't Homeless use those for the 'Soul Bro'?  I'm rambling now  :crazy2:

I always saw the HAF as part joke, part reaction to Standard frames. They were well built and well engineered but I dont think much thought was put into the type of riding it was intended for and the frames geometry. At the time lots of bikes had massive dropouts that hung way down below the peg (like standards) as a sort of spoke guard. I always thought this was awful and made the chainstay the dropout get in the way for grinds. The HAF went the other way and cut the drop out just below the peg bringing everything out of the way for grinds. It got loads of stick for this (including on the frame test in Invert) but it worked great, and is how most new school drop outs are now. (Im not sure why the HAF drop out was so big ABOVE the peg tho!).

I almost got a HAF in 1994 but I got another Dirtbike instead. Im glad I didnt get a HAF but now I kinda wish I'd got a menstural cycle (S&M spin off company, a bit like Fit are).

I had a Menstrual Alex, It was not a great frame, the front end was really stiff (good) but it made the back end super flexy, the geometry was fantastic as an all-rounder but i just couldn't live with the back end flex, maybe thats why it was such a short lived frame.

You're dead right about the HAF, not a lot of thought and an attempt to get in on the Standard Lengthy (awesome frame)/ Big Daddy game.

I remember Ride did a 3 way test with Stu Dawkins and i recall the HAF didn't do too well.

John Dye had a menstrual for quite a while and loved it. I asked him, not long ago, if he still had it and he said he sold it for a tenner. I never rode one but I know that Keith Trenor ... well ... John Povah actually, put a lot of thought into it.

I remember the HAF test that had afro's Stu doing a wall ride and Ian Morris doing a well step rail (showing perfectly how great the drop outs worked). I need to dig out that mag to try and make the frame decals.

I would think the Mad Dog frame is the hardest S&M to find (well, it is the oldest). I read on the G-sport page that "G" made the custom canti brakes on his bike out of the seat stays from a Mad Dog frame. Id have bought him a length of new tube to make his brakes for that frame. hell, Id have bought him some new canti brakes!

What makes that worse is that George's home made frame was a shed!

Mick Moore  (mr. pants - remember him?)  said to me at a bike show one time  'if that fcucking george french tries to engineer me one more time I will iron him out for sure'    made me laugh for hours that did   ;D

old standards became basics ....
homeless became nothing else (it always built its own frames)
basic made a frame called the street fighter which was the same as the dirtbike but with a 0.49 rear triangle
dirt bros used to recycle old skyway ta frames and redline forks.
jon dye did all the artwork for the menstral cycles.
john povah designed the HAF as far as i know.
