Removing a Coaster Brake ?

What's the easiest way to replace a Coaster Brake hub with a standard freewheel on a Skyway wheel? Do I need a conversion kit ? Or replacement hub kit? Never done this before….can anyone help or advise from experience….!?

Easiest way is to use one of the old JB adaptors (think alans do them?).

It's basically the same helical screw as the drive your flat coaster sprocket sits onto, only it's threaded to take a regular freewheel.

Next option is one of the acs freecoaster kits like wolfybmx is selling. Again, you change the helical driver for the acs one and slap on their freewheel.

Final option is drilling out the hub and retro-fitting a freewheel hub. Kinda hard to get now, you'll probably end up needing a donor wheel.

Yes they did arrive and I have been able to put everything together and go for a test ride.  I promise that I will put up pictures soon!! 

As far as spare parts go, I think that I am getting the hoarding bug!  I either want to get hold of an absolutely pristine driver and sprocket, or I want one that i can get welded up nicely without risking the nice one that you sent me.  Oh who am I kidding......I just want to buy more parts!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Matt.  I appreciate that.  Was it your lovely Trickstar that I recall seeing pics of?  If so, you will be glad to know that your your (possibly) discarded parts will be going to help another Trickstar survive a bit longer!

There's also the Precision Products 'Unbrake', sort of a spacer that fits in a Suntour coaster brake and deactivates the braking mechanism.

I just bought a Sturmey Archer 16t cog and circlip from Ebay, hopefully they'll fit my skyway coaster brake.
I'd bought a set of wheels but these parts were missing - I read that they were packaged seperately in a bag BITD and were sometimes lost.

I've done a couple of these conversions and they all seem to be a bit shite.

Is it me or do the cones always seem to come loose. They seem to be either too tight or too loose.
I've found that the wheel doesn't spin as freely once the conversion has been done.

Can someone shed some light.

Picked up the Skyways yesterday (they are the real early Tuff 2's), they look brand spanking new, never even been set-up ! It'd be a shame to mess with them.......

Unused Skyways of that era are getting rarer, I certainly wouldn't go drilling out the hub
Use one of the add-on converters to turn it into a freewheel, or buy a seperate Tuff with a freewheel.

At the very least keep all the coaster parts, as new spares are hard to find. If you ever want to part with the dustcover or cog/circlip please let me know
