Frame Building

I wonder how much effort it takes and what prep you need to build your own BMX frames.
From an engineering point of view it's not going to be rocket science.
Has anybody else thought about giving it a go.

Im still thinking about doing it ive got loads of ideas mainly old school with a modern twist ive got loads of drawings etc just need a welding torch and some 4130 tubing or reynolds 531 no alloy steel is the real deal...

Talking about Mountainbike-sized Rippers...

My ultimate bike frame's on ebay right now, but no way I could afford that one.
Maybe one day I'll try to get something similar done, probably not by me though.

I'd like to learn how to weld, I'll look into nightclasses at some point.

a mate still has 2 frames that his dad built back in 84 for him, was built the same as a patterson was cro mo tubing built on a jig, well impressed, pity his dad is the last of a few of a dying breed

That's incredible work.

On the STR-1 that's just one tube that forms downtube, chainstay and seatstay? (one either side of course)
For the PK, did you use an old Ripper frame for the floval tubing, or make your own using half-sections of tube and flat metal?

That'd be something, being able to build your own bike in exactly the design you want. Amazing bikes.

Yes just one piece of tube bent on the str.On the pk I used a bit or round and squashed it with a piece of steel inside so it didn't collapse.

good choice of tubing

Some of these builds are cool guys,I thought it would have been more difficult to do this yourself what with negative and positive forces(yep just finished college) you should give yourself a pat on the back bearing in mind that some top name frames broke on a regular basis.ie Pro burner gusset would break just on the paper round.....

enough for a road frame so not sure if ok for a bmx??
