80's chrome was way better but i don't thin that will be saveable!!! Wouldn't hurt to give it an Oxy Acid bath just to see what happens?  :-\

So the rat arrived today. It came in a square box with another flimsy box taped on covering the rear end. That's a first. It was in one piece though, with no bends or shipping damage. When I unboxed it, everything has some sort of heavy oil smeared over it. Maybe this was an attempt to loosen some of the rust. Some of that crust was moist and it has a certain smell, a bit like diesel. A wheel axle had dislodged a section of crust on the down tube, revealing chrome. Not the prettiest chrome but it's there. So because this rat is as slippery as a wet fish and pongs a bit it's getting a bath.
 :LolLolLolLol:
Not my initial plan but I think it's my only option now. Let's try to polish a turd 💩

The wheels should clean up ok with a bit of work, they are Femco rims on ACS hubs dated 93. I think they are the stock wheels for the 94 Shredder. The frame is November 93 so it's got to be a 94.

The seller threw in a pair of mid school Mongoose tyres which was a nice gesture, and will help me out parts wise.

Do you guys think that a good squirt of WD40 to the inside of the tubes after the OA bath will be good enough ? Or should I invest in a proper rust treatment ?

Cheers

The frame, forks and bars had a quick dip in a very diluted OA mix. They were left in just long enough to clean the chrome a little and remove any loose debris from the crust and clean up the inner headstock and bb shell. I treated all the internal tubing and I'm getting closer to starting the build.

Here's a few parts that will most likely get thrown on this rat.

Just ordered some cheap decals for the rat. I will see which one works best when they arrive. I'm liking the shat look !
Almost completed the build, waiting for a gyro cable to arrive and that's it, done.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot. The Haro grind disc is too nice for the rat so I picked this up to use. Great patina on it.
  :LolLolLolLol:
Got a great deal on this Fusion stem too, it's perfect on the rat.

Cheers gents  :daumenhoch:

I was hoping to have the rat finished today but the gyro and rear brake have defeated me. I put the tools down before they were used to beat the rust off of this build.
:tickedoff:
I will give it another crack tomorrow. It's only my second gyro set up but the first was no trouble at all. Other than that I need to put the cable end on the front brake, oil the chain and top up the tyres with air. Then it's done.

Cheers, it's been a fun little project. Yeah, nearly all parts have seen action and have their scars and history, some more than others. They live to ride another day. I've tried to keep new parts to a minimum. Surprisingly, quite a lot of the parts are spec on a 95 Shredder too.

You've given me an idea, I'm sure I've seen the canal + logo on sport sponsorship over the years. I might try to find a nice little decal for the seat post !
