Wow. Never thought this would ever happen.
I had a good move around the other day.
I managed to get them in so I can fit another on the end (the Fit). That leaves me room for one more complete. Was going to do the Root Down, but really wanted to end with a bang. I can fit three in my bathroom as it sits (I have a triple floor stand, I just need to bring it over).
TBH I could fit nearly all of my bikes in there, and maybe someday will have to. You can't walk into that part of the room without smashing your head. I currently dry clothes in there, but do have a tumbler. So yeah, realistically I can do one more and have room to keep it.
What better than literally the king of midschool bikes?
I bought the frame from a guy on the T1 group on Facebook. Oddly enough I bought my Ruben from him at about exactly this same time two years ago.
Someone cut the seat tube down to new school size so they could slam the seat. Which is annoying, but it made it half the price of any other code frame. I'm not bothered about it tbh. At some point a mate of mine is retiring, and I will get him to convert it into a Garrett any way. As part of the deal I got some bars also.
Which as usual triggered me into "FIND ALL THE PARTS" mode. I had some stuff left over I have had years that I will be using. First up the cranks. I bought these in 2012 for my SE, then swapped them out for SE cranks.
They're nothing special. However, they work and they work great. I will repaint them in gloss black as they are currently a flat black and I don't like the Salt logo. I needed wheels *gulp*. We all know what good wheels cost. It's always bloody scary. However, I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve. Step one was IMG's Ebay clearout account. Not many know about it, so it's usually got some gems in it.
20 quid. Sun Rhino Lite and a Mirraco hub. For the rear wheel I found a NOS Seventies sealed 13t cassette with a Supra G rim.
Tyres. Fly Sergio. These were ?16 each on sale.
Thankfully I have two Euro 19mm BBs, as they aren't cheap (about forty quid ffs) So I splashed a bit on a 36t Profile.
Cheap seat post (getting polished, or if the alu is crap painted)
Cheap seat clamp (again getting painted)
Cranks are missing the end bolts. I nicked them for something else.
Cheap United chain.
Headset.
Mission (Kink) "Cease" V2
It's a cheaper version of the Kink CNC "Desist". Quite funny. "Our brakes are called cease and desist".
Cable (Jet)
Lever (Jet. I have ordered polished, but there is no pic of it in polished)
Splashed a bit on the stem. It was 40 quid on sale down from 60. Big chunky boi like my Bone Deth Muffin top. They are very similar.
United Purge IIRC. Seat I had. Picked it up for a tenner ages ago.
Had a choice of fork. A new school unbranded cheapo set or these.
Huffy 4130 fork (unless some bastud has nicked them from my shed). Will repaint those in black. Kinda remind me of Pitch Fork. Best thing is they are uncut.
I bought pedals for my upcoming (now not happening) 2hip build.
But the grips I bought didn't match (ODI). I found out they do matching grips, so I bought those too.
They don't look like they match, but they do a pedal slightly different in the same colour and here they are with the grips together.
OK. So the colour. I hate raw. Well, I like it in context. IE on a Mad Max build like matey's race bike here. However, with NOS and new school parts all over? nah. So I am going to do it seafoam green.
However, lessons were learned doing the Ruben. IE, don't use fake 2k clear. Lots of bullshitters out there. The paint on the Ruben came out incredible, but it literally falls off due to the shite clear
Lesson learned. Buy proper 2k clear with the hardener in it that needs popping to release.
Coming to you sometime this year........
