Ruffell tribute build
« on: January 02, 2019, 07:43 PM »
So I was struggling to decide what my next build was gonna be and I needed a bit of inspiration, this came in the form of Paul macdonald’s lovely Andy Ruffell replica aero pro burner. I’d seen a few pics of it at various shows and then in the metal at MK18, I just loved the look of it, the colourway the wheels the plate the lot!
That was it job done I wanted one of them, I know it’s not very original and it’s been done before bla bla bla, but fook it that’s what I want to do.
I decided I wanted it to be my 2019 rider so I wasn’t gonna get to anal about it being totally og or the exact spec etc, just a really nice looking bike hopefully.
The first part that I searched for was what I thought would be the hardest to get an ESP stem, but as luck would have it I looked on eBay and found one in Cheltenham that my mate Jason Higgins was selling, so a call was made and the stem was mine. And no it’s not og but then again it wasn’t 600 quid, it’s a lovely stem though.
Once I got that the Ruffell rep was definitely happening 👍🏼
Next up was the F&F, I scored one from FB which was very nice structurally but needed a re paint, this was entrusted to Mark Ralph who did an amazing job including airbrushing on the graphics, note “Team Raleigh” on dt and tt ala Ruffell ‘s bike.
I also got Mark to restore an og White Kashi which was mine bitd and turn it blue and airbrush Raleigh on the side, again really quality work.
Oh and while he was at it I got him to paint the brake set white as well, I’d already stripped and prepped these.
The wheels I must say thanks to Jason Smith ( Burnerboy on here) he donated me a near scrap set of Araya 7X which I made into homemade Pro-class wheels
You can see the resto thread here http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,194005.0.html
The plate was another hard one to source as the correct Haro Flo panel in the matt dull yellow is nigh on impossible to get, so a Landar copy was bought from eBay and some yellow vinyl dye spray, and I made me own, along with Dels decals that is.
The rest of the bits weren’t too bad to get Paul Macdonald came up trumps with some re pop grips and a Renthal post.
I got all the bits back from the painter just before Xmas and built it up in time to get it under the tree :)
It’s a mix of re pop and og parts but I’m really chuffed with how it’s turned out, I’ve just got one last thing to do and that’s send the brakes off to Moza so he can fit the QR’s for me
Thanks for reading and I’ll list the parts and spec below and also add pics.
Much love Benno

Wow

Stuck for words to credit this build is deserves !

There are some bikes that simply scream what BMX looks and feels like, and this bike is one of them !

I don”t know how you do it Mike, but every build that is fabricated from the garage is pure quality and of show winning standard. You have created a thing of beauty and also crafted rather than bought and put together!

Hats off to you son

Thought i’d already commented on this, but clearly not  :-[
A truly amazing build Mike that oozes passion & commitment. The builds that involve resto, refurb and a bit of fettling just add that extra bit of something for me. Unbelievable attention to detail, which is what we have all come to expect from you. A build of the highest order. Well done  :4_17_5:
