Fork top cap tightening
« on: March 04, 2019, 09:16 PM »
Evening folks!

I have got some Colony Guardian forks whose top cap looks like this...
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/colony-fork-top-cap/rp-prod114257
...and that little blurb there suggests to tighten I use a 3/8” socket wrench fitment, which I assume is one of these, and just use as is without any bits attached?...
https://www.universalmedicalinc.com/titanium-socket-wrenches-and-ratchet-handle-3-8.html

My question though, is when I offer up my 3/8 ratchet to the top nut it's not the snuggest of fit, there must be a good 1mm of play, does that seem right? I don't want to burr up the top nut, or are top nuts pretty robust?

In my time I have messed up many a screw head by being a shade lazy and not bothering to go and get the right size screw driver...but I don't want to mess up the top nut.

Cheers!

They are pretty robust and also this doesn't need to be stupidly tight ... its only tightened to remove the play in the headset ... the bolts on the stem do all the work to hold things in place.

Ahhhh ok, so just tighten enough to reduce the play?

That's cracking info, thanks!!
